Moderate Alcohol consumption and ketosis

Answered on August 19, 2014

If I drink 2-3 beers daily, at night, but otherwise maintain a LC to VLC lifestyle, is my body coming out of ketosis at night? Will I return to a ketotic state the next day?

of course you are burning fat. Everyone burns some fat all the time. But it is very unlikely that you are in ketosis -- and unlikely that you are fat-adapted (unless you do periodic fasting). You have a lot of alcohol and carbs to burn before your body even thinks about going after the stored fat.

Thanks. Assuming a 3000 cal diet, 600 from the beer, if I am otherwise on a LC diet, am I burning fat?

get a meter and test your blood to find out. I would bet you never enter into ketosis in the first place if you are drinking every day.

Actually, any amount of ethanol kicks your liver out of ketosis. It needs to wait until it's processed :)

2-3 beers per day is more than enough to prevent most people from ever getting into ketosis. If you are concerned there are valid blood tests for ketones. My assumption is that you are never in keotsis. 3 beers a day is going to be in the 600 calorie range (that's 20% of your caloric intake @3000 calories) with 50-75g of carbs (unless it Light or Ultra -- but at that point, why bother drinking it).

So your body will have to burn 600 calories before it starts to look for other sources of energy. Ketosis is unlikely.

Choose red or white DRY wines, rarely BRUT champagne, but any in moderation. Vodka, ocassionally, is fine, but it can also lead to uncontrolled consumption of everything in reach :)

yes, drinking sugar will bring you out of ketosis, if you are in fact in ketosis, which why I don't understand why you would pursue if you want to drink alcohol every night.

Stick to hard liquor and once the alcohol is burned your right back in ketosis.
