Migraines and Carbs

Hello vdh1979, I also suffer from chronic migraines and have found relief from low-carb diets in the past. I'm also on Topamax currently and I'm considering stopping it and going back on the diet the but wanted to give the med a chance first and eat carbs too. I have found that carb intake gives me migraines and that only a ketosis diet helps prevent them completely. I want to hear more on your success w/ the diet.

Ha. I get the "stupids" so badly...I am a PhD and I was once lecturing a class full of MD ophthalmologists. I completely lost the word I was going for and blurted out "eyeball thingy". Talk about the "stupids"! I was so embarrassed. That's Dopamax for you. But I didn't get a migraine at least! LOL

I love Topamax. For a while would have the "stupids" for an hour or two after I took a dosage but it would go away and now I never have it. Now i never have migraines due to the meds I'm on: Topamax, Verapmil, Trazadone, Depakote, Butterbur (Alot, I know). But now what need to overcome is the inflammation of the brain that been caused by years of migraines and depression. The Trazadone is supposed to decrease nuerogenic inflammation, so does exercise.

I have used Relpax for migraines with good success. But the less carbs I eat, the less migraines I have.

Topamax has been my "miracle" for stopping my migraines. I was on it for one year and became migraine free for four years. I recently had to start it up again, though since starting gluten-free/Paleo I'm wondering if I could come off and maintain migraine control. Does it not work for you? Are the side effects intolerable? I get the taste perversion, the "pins and needles" in my hands and feet, and the "stupids", but I live with those because I like not having migraines so much better.

Good luck to you.
