Ketosis vs. General Fat Loss

Answered on September 12, 2014
Created July 20, 2011 at 4:39 PM

If you are losing fat, does this necessarily mean you are in ketosis? Another way to put this question might be: Is ketosis the mechanism by which the body reduces fat stores, or are there others? If so, what are they, and in what ways are they physiologically different from ketosis, and why might you (personally) give one process preference over the other?

EDIT: A more precise way to ask this might be "If you are losing fat, does this necessarily mean you are releasing ketones." Thanks, Ambimorph!

YES! You will know when I am ready to RETIRE from PH when I go for the ACUTAL ASS shot - (should be ready once I surpass Thomas in "points") then, I'm a goner I'm afraid!

@Meredith aka El Diablo - Nice Pix. I guess all I need to do is ask and I shall receive. I still haven't seen the ass shot though. Are you afraid that I will be overpowered by the tractor beam of hotness? Probably right.

Maybe you should change your name to that. Or Oksana. Or El Diablo, which in Mexican means fighting chicken, with the beak....guess you would be "La", but whatever. I don't speak Japanese.

@Meredith - Clearly I still lead in the "coming out" tally on PH. Regardless, I have decided that my affinity for the Honey Badger warranted the name change. Did you recognize the line in my profile? You realize almost all my comedic lines here are for you :-)

Thanks--this is precisely what I was curious about. And thanks for calling out my imprecision--I did indeed mean "does fat loss mean you're producing ketones," rather than does it mean you're producing them over a given threshold.

Thanks for the links, they were interesting, but they answer a slightly different question--a more macro question. I'm asking about what is going on at the level of the fat cell.

In a sense this is true. Ketone bodies are a product of fat oxidation, so if you're burning fat, you're making ketone bodies. Ketosis is usually defined as being over a certain threshold level of ketone production. So in that sense, no.

If you are losing fat you are not necessarily in what people refer to as ???ketosis.???

If you are burning fat stores you are certainly in lipolysis (purely be definition, but I mention it as a semi-counterpoint to the usage of the word ???ketosis???), but you are almost certainly producing ketones. The question here becomes one of simply ???what does one define by ketosis????. Is it anything above and beyond simply the "burning" of ketones as a fuel source? Does the word refer to a threshold amount of this burning, for example.

Could the following perhaps be a clearer way of answering your question? Our bodies are constantly burning both fat stores and glucose.

At work now so this will be quick - ketosis is not the only mechanism for fat loss and if you are losing weight, it does not mean you are in ketosis, though you might be subject to your carbohydrate intake. Calories-in/calories out in the context of ones hormonal milieu and extent of prior metabolic derangement determines fat loss.

Please read these to start and this evening I might be able to elaborate (if necessary)
