I've been in moderate ketosis for ~6 weeks. Just when I was hoping to experience a surge of energy, I've been slammed with gruesome headaches instead. Also itchy skin.
Is it common to experience strange or bad symptoms as we move to this style of eating? I've heard that some people experience Candida die-off, but what about other things? Toxins are stored in our fat cells, and when we lose fat they're released into our blood stream, which can cause temporary symptoms. Any other ideas?
My background: I've had tension headaches since childhood (I'm 61), but these are different - one-sided and intense. Current diet: lots of low-glycemic veggies, some animal protein at each meal, enough good fat to make me happy. Before starting the ketogenic diet 6 weeks ago, I had eliminated grains, legumes, and dairy about 6 weeks earlier. Before that I limited my carbs/grains for the past 10 years or so (Zone-style), so I haven't really made any dramatic changes.
Also, I just had an appointment with my eye doctor, who said my eye glasses prescription hasn't changed much (i.e. this isn't eye strain), and everything inside the eyes looks great.
So... can anybody reassure me that these awful, disabling headaches are a temporary adjustment that will go away if I just keep doing what I'm doing? I hope???
