is there a way to keto without feeling like a zombie?

All of my past experiences I've had with keto I've felt tired, confused, hazy, dizzy, woozy, car-accident prone, cranky, weak, like the speaker from "One" by Metallica only not comatose...you get the idea. Is there some way to go into keto and not feel like you've been smashed in the head with a giant hammer?

Don't laugh at me, I know I was dumb, but I was still under the CW persuasion that fat is bad, so my MDR was abo. 70% protein, 8% fat, 2% carb (consisted mostly of lean meats and veggies) (but now I've learned that fats are not bad and they keep you full for a long time and of course they taste delicious, so I hope for the future if I were to keto I won't feel like a martyr-zombie)

If that is so, the next time I go to my local Middle Eastern market, I'll get some lamb brains :)

Conclusion:'...one caveat that anaerobic (weight lifting or sprint) performance is limited by low muscle glycogen levels induced by a ketogenic diets, and this would strongly discourage its use under most conditions of competitive athletics'

lol... not what I got out of that paper at all. In fact, it pretty much supports my point entirely. The problems arose with the high protein, low fat keto diet... and the keto diets that weren't allowed the proper time for fat adaptation.

If you cut carbs out, and then just wait for your energy to return to normal, of course you feel week. Ketosis doesn't manifest energy out of thin air. It burns fat instead of carbs.

So no, carbs are not needed to maintain ANY energy level. You need to be eating enough fat to support your lifestyle. Regardless of how intense your needs might be, they can be met if you eat enough fat.

The first thing to do is make sure there is enough fat around to be made into ketones. The biohacker way would probably be coffee and MCT oil. The old fashioned way would be eat fatty meat.

Here is Jenny Ruhl's diet calculator, which will help you get an idea of how much you should be eating.

She is a diabetic and she's mainly concerned with helping people handle their diabetes.

She also mentions something I think she got from Dr. Bernstein, to use if you find yourself with low blood sugar. Apparently small doses of glucose (2g?) will bring up the blood sugar but not trigger insulin. I tried this with Smarties- completely non-paleo I know. Maybe you can get by with a small peach or something. It helps if you have a glucometer and can see how much your blood sugar jumps. You don't want to trigger insulin because it will stop ketone production and clear it out of your bloodstream so that energy source won't be there. This is why we end up feeling like crap- we just don't have enough of any energy source.

Once ketone production is well established, most of these issues go away.

Some people don't do well on keto. It depends on your lifesyle. If you're very active, crossfit, frequent glycogen dependant sports, you will constantly feel bad.

Well you should build off the carbs slowly. Give your body time. It does not change to a different fuel overnight. Your insulin has to come down, your muscles should switch to fat, glucagon production has to fire up etc etc etc. If you haven't been in keto before, give your body at least two weeks to become a fat burner. Build of your carbs in these two weeks, not suddenly! Don't forget that for digestion powerful hormones are being produced and that most hormones are programmed on an internal clock. It takes time to switch.

In your past experiences what were your macros and how long did you stick with it? What about now? Give us stats maaaan. :)

How long do you think you we're in ketosis? I feel excellent in ketosis but it takes at least 1-2 weeks for my blood sugar and brain to feel stable/good/normal. In fact, I'm transitioning out of keto right now and I feel the way you are describing minus the crankiness I get transitioning into keto.
