How do you know you are in Ketosis?

Its almost two weeks now but I never experienced any so called ketosis symptoms like 'metallic taste, tiredness, bad breath odor' etc. (don't know how many of them are true). So I am starting to wonder whether I am in ketosis at all!

Started off with very low carb (no fruits) for almost a week and since I have high cortisol, I figured out that medium carb intake is better. But till now haven't experienced anything weird. Life is just normal.

If you eat lots of protein and fat, you can produce enough glucose through gluconeogenesis to "knock you out of ketosis" (which means enough to meet your brain's requirement without ketones).

I meant relatively in the literal sense of relative to other fats, not relatively as in "kinda." I don't dispute that you won't find a more ketogenic natural foodstuff.

Tthe ketostix measure ketonurea (ketones in the urine). If your carbs are low enough, you are producing ketones, don't worry. Whether or not they spill out in your urine is another matter.

Coconut is not relatively ketogenic, it's extremely ketogenic! MCTs get absorbed directly through the gut into the portal vein, and don't require carnitine to enter mitochondria, resulting in a very fast increase of acetyl-CoA. Coconut can produce ketone bodies even under high-carbohydrate diets.

I might also add, if you are not eating any carbs, then you have to be in ketosis because where else could your energy come from?

I've not noticed any of these alleged ketosis symptoms and I've gone weeks without consuming carbs. This includes extended periods of fasting. I think I notice a few changes in mood during periods when I'm in extensive ketosis, but nothing that would suffice to serve as an indicator.

I think it needs to be recognised that ketosis is not a binary in/out affair and also that just eating a high fat diet doesn't necessarily mean you'll be in deep ketosis. This table is fantastic. It shows that the levels of ketones in the blood vary as follows: 0.1 for a normal diet, up to 0.3 on a 12-24 hour fast, up to 1 during late pregnancy, 0.7-1 in a 5-10 day old baby, up to 2 post-exercise, 2-3 on a 48-72 hour fast, up to 3 on a high fat diet, 4-6 in late pregnancy after 48hours fasting and up to 25 in an untreated diabetic. I think this shows that eating high fat is not the be all and end all, and exercise and fasting are major factors and also that ketosis is not a radically unusual state, but rather something that neonates and pregnant women routinely enter (without bizarre symptoms).

Notably the liver can hold up to 100-120g of carbohydrate, so you may not quickly enter ketosis after ceasing to eat carbs, your stored glycogen (and any excess protein) will see to your body's needs for some time. If, as is common among paleos, you're eating quite a lot of meat, then you'll be generating a lot of glucose endogenously- more than enough to limit ketosis (which seriously begins once you exceed more than 25% of calories from protein).

Also I do wonder how low carb "very low carb, (no fruits)" is, since you can be extremely high carb without eating any fruit.

If you really want to be sure you're in ketosis, then do some intense exercise and eat not too much protein and lots of coconut (which is relatively ketogenic).

I never had the bad breath. (My friends are not too polite to tell me) The tiredness was mild and only for a few days. I noticed a slight taste diferential a few times long ago, but I would not call it 'metallic' The one thing I noticed most when I kicked into major fat burning ketosis mode was a sudden big surge of energy. I felt like running around the yard or something. ANyway, not everyone has a lot of symptoms or even all of them. Some, probably those with the least metabolic damage and the best fit genetics, can find the transition to be rather seemless and easy.

Serious answer: make sure you look at this earlier thread on ketosis:

You can be in ketosis without having significant ketones in your urine.

While these aren't guaranteed to verify ketosis or lack thereof (depends on the user), I have heard good things about them in general:

Ketostix

Your pee and breath will smell really strong and you will start shedding lots of body fat at a quick rate. Just don't stay in ketosis for too long. Once your reach your ideal body composition and restore insulin sensitivity, you can gradually add a little bit of carbs back in, mostly glucose based carbs like yams and sweet potatoes.

Happens to me when i go below 50 grams carbs for a few days... a constant low level sweat is noticeable. I'm not obsessed enough to buy ketostix. I then cycle back in paleo carbs and i get a weight drop the next morning. What Mark Sisson says about cycling carbs back in to kick start fat loss is 100% verified. It's as predictable as my mid morning snack of Season Brand sardines.

The only way I can tell is by urine smell. Stronger after a fast. Not sure about the breath - maybe no one would dare tell me?
