How do you know if your body is in Ketosis?

I have been following the Primal Blueprint for about a month now, and I was wondering how you know if you have reached ketosis when you have limited carbs?

Not necessarily, if you eat too much meat, the excess protein can inhibit ketosis.

Although my understanding is that a false positive on the ketostix is rare (possible, I guess, but rare). If the color changes, you're probably in ketosis; if not, you might still be ketosis and just not spilling excess ketones.

Honestly, if you are eating a lot of meat and one piece of celery a day...you are in ketosis...lol. Its different for everyone but generally if you are below 30-40 grams of carbs is what I understand.

ketosix sold in the drug store, I'd do first thing in the AM, its usually concentrated but tells you if you were in this state, then test various times during the day.

BUT, after eating it will show negative and if you are drinking tons liquids probably will show neg. as well (your body washes out the ketones).

Sometimes you feel a natural high when you are in ketosis, you might feel like you've had some caffiene and have a burst of energy you've not noted before. You don't need to be in a high state of ketosis just some level of it, its all the same to your body.

If you are watching your calorie intake, carbs are less than 50g day, fat at about 55-65%, protein no more than 25% you should be in fat burning mode. I'd start there, checking your intake and after about 2 wks of holding a steady set of numbers, if you aren't showing in ketosis, start tweaking it a bit until you are.

IF'ing will also help, try having a good breakfast, lunch and just a light dinner snack EARLY and IF until the next morning. I only IF for up to 18 hrs and I've managed to stay in ketosis regularly for months. When I'm in a position where I can't eat or won't eat whats provided me, I'll fast and it doesnt phase me one bit. Normally I would shake and 'need' food, but my body can handle it now.

I'm no longer trying to loose weight but rather burn excess fat still and its working!!

The only truly accurate way is a blood test. They sell ketosis urinalysis strips at drug stores, but these are heavily influenced by your hydration levels.

I smell it in my urine, the ketones, very high in fact.
