Hacking ketosis

I just started eating paleo strictly about 2 weeks ago. I eat lotsa meat, lots n lotsa veggies (no white taters), and fruits sparingly. How do I know if I am in ketosis with out buying the testing strips? How long should I be in ketosis? Can you live in ketosis forever if you always eat paleo? Are there any health risks associated with that?

If you are eating less than 100g a day of carbs you'll be fuelling your brain with ketones to some degree. I wouldn't worry about it, judge your diet by how happy and healthy it makes you feel rather than by if it makes a piss stick turn purple. Sounds like you're doing fine in that regard.

I'm not necessarily trying to be in ketosis, only wondering about it because Paleo is a low carb diet

And of course peeing on ketostix and "getting purple" is great fun.

You might be able to tell that you are in ketosis by the smell of your breath, the smell of your sweat and the smell of your piss, none of which are that pleasant in deep ketosis. Honestly though, it's easier just to shell out $15 on some ketostix.

I also feel more lucid, less stressed and less hungry in ketosis.

A rookie mistake is eating too much protein. You need to eat enough to fuel structural needs and a small amount of gluconeogenesis (to feed your brain). Above this minimum too much gluconeogenesis will refill your liver and nock you out of ketosis. Volek says 18% of energy from protein max.

Why are you doing it? In my case it's for diabetic control. There isn't much evidence on how safe it is long term, but for me the known complications of high-blood sugar outweigh the speculative complications of too long in ketosis. And to be honest, I'm healthier happier and fitter in ketosis, so that must be some sort of indication that it's good for me.
