V8 Veggie Juice Online Controversy - Please help!

Answered on August 19, 2014

I'm seeing a lot of people go one way or the other on V8 vegetable juice, like the one in cans. Does anyone have any intake? On some paleo forms people are saying it's terrible, on other they're saying it's a great quick fix on the go. I'm new and confused! Please help!

Real food has no ingredient list, JCB. Real food is an ingredient by itself. By your definition, everything is real food.

Here are the ingredients of a can of V8 Juice straight from the label: Tomato Juice from Concentrate (Water, Tomato Paste), Reconstituted Vegetable Juice Blend (Water and Concentrated Juices of Carrots, Celery, Beets, Parsley, Lettuce, Watercress, Spinach), Lemon Juice from Concentrate (Water, Lemon Juice Concentrate), Salt, Natural Flavoring, Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Citric Acid.

I'm sorry, aside from the fact that it is in a can (and after all, so is coconut milk), what isn't real food about V8? I suppose the small amount of "natural flavoring" could be MSG or some other nasty, but the rest is vegetables, salt and a bit of Vit C.

I never thought V8 tasted bad myself, tastes better with a little vodka though. ;)

Does it still taste totally gross or have they actually made it palatable?

If V8 is your biggest concern, you're doing pretty well as a newbie! My advice is if you want vegetables in your diet, then eat them whole, not as juice with lots of salt and BPA.

If you want something to drink that doesn't have lots of sugar, then enjoy your V8 for now and save up for a Vitamix and make your own veggie juice!

Too highly processed. As with many orange juices, the veg juices are kept in concentrates in large vats and mixed to make sure every batch of V8 tastes like every other batch. I don't know how you can keep the integrity of the juices after all the processing that goes on. The nutrition becomes suspect. If you are hell-bent on juice, buy a juicer and make your own. Juice is concentrated carbs and you are not benefitting from the whole food.

For me, it has too many carbs and I would avoid the cans due to BPAs (my coconut milk comes in BPA-free cans, btw). But I also think V8 comes in glass jars as well. But if you can handle the carb count (I'm diabetic and can't), I think it could be a quick way to get in some veggies when in a hurry. I haven't looked at the ingredients lately, so am not sure if there are any real baddies in there.

It could be great if it's homemade. And Matt, vodka goes with Clamato and a pickled bean!
