Do you think Jimmy Moore is adopting paleo to save his business?

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created October 09, 2011 at 6:29 PM

This was said here by Evelyn (CarbSane) to ben

@ben61820: Jimmy is co-opting paleo to save his business. To be fair, even a year or so ago, "paleo" was rather synonymous with low carb. There've been quite a few comings out, changes of heart, and rising stars who aren't LC in the past year but Jimmy's ignoring that.

So we know what Evelyn thinks, but what does everyone else think?

Is the paleo community just imploding from within? Or is the low carb community?

I would not be surprised if Jimmy transitioned to paleo as part of his and Christine's latest (and sadly unsuccessful) fertlity efforts. I believe they transitioned well before AHS as he recently mentioned Christine has lost 30 lbs. I doubt he's co-opting paleo; if anything, it puts him in an awkward position with the manufacturers of the latest low carb drinks, bars etc. that advertise on his site when he personally doesn't cosume them any more.

Profit?! How can one profit financially from eating and advocating real food? There's way more money in low carb pseudo-foods. As a low carb advocate, to be prepared to experiment with a change in diet, takes real courage and openess. I salute him, and I value his willingness to sharing his experiments and progress with us all.

I hope he gives up all the frankenfoods he eats such as all the atkins bars and other protein bars he eats. Yams and sweet potatoes are much better for you. Robb Wolf, Chris Kesser, Paul Jaminet, Kurt Harris, Mat lalonde, Stephan Guynet have all began recommending increasing carbs in the form of safe starches.

This question strikes me as a really unfair dig against Jimmy. He seems to me to be very open and honest about his search for dietary wisdom. He allows others to share their views without attack. The fact that he has been influenced by his many paleo guests only supports his pattern of open inquiry. I don't see his business "failing," though I am not privy to his financial status. He seems to be ever more popular.

Why is that best left ignored? Even if Jimmy adopted Paleo only to save his business then he still makes plenty of positive impact. Jimmy has a different audience or maybe a broader spectrum.

Totally fair and agree. By "idea of this question" I was trying to get across more that I was bothered that it needed to be asked in the first place because I'm still surprised (annoyed?) people think the evolution of an idea is a bad thing - as her comment implies. So, not the question itself, more the ideas that led up to the question... if I'm explaining this correctly. (I'm having trouble getting this explanation from my mind to my keyboard in a way that I'm sure makes sense.)

I think the idea of this question bothers me.. not specifically in the Paleo community, just in life. The idea of it is something you see in politics a lot too. ("OMG! He's flip-flopping!") And while I have no interest in turning this into a political discussion, my point is only this:

As human beings, we can only make decisions based on the best information available to us at the time. When we are presented with new information, we may analyze it and change our opinions/ideas on things. This is how we learn and grow. If we don't consider new information, we stagnate. So to assume that one is changing their mind on something (or not changing specifically, more.. adding on, I suppose...) purely for some sort of other reason (financial gain, etc.) may be selling someone short. Yeah, that could be his (or anyone else's) reason, but it might also be because he learned something new and is acting on new information presented to him.

Honestly, I prefer to see someone's ideas evolve - whether they do or do not mesh with my own. It's nice to see people think and move forward.

Jimmy is just learning and expanding his 'healthy foods' list. Don't bash him, I think everything Jimmy does is from the heart and for his health and that of his family. He is a really very nice guy. And btw, how would being Paleo profit him anyway???? That is just silly. If he changed his show and blog name to "livin' la Vida Caveman" you might have a point. But he did not and he will not IMHO.

I think it's utterly ridiculous. Jimmy's not the first low-carber to transition to a cleaner, "paleo" version of the diet. Many of us started with Atkins and fell into the low-carb frankenfood trap, caring far more about the net carb count than the source or quality of the food. Jimmy's on a journey to improve his health, and as he continues to learn, he'll adapt as he goes. Simple as that.

Absolutely not. Jimmy is a committed low-carber and continues to be an outstanding leader in the LC community. As others have said, he adopted a Paleo/Primal lifestyle following AHS11. His transition to Paleo reflects a genuine desire for improved health and is in no way related to financial concerns.

I do not think Jimmy is co-opting paleo for business sake, nor do I think the paleo community is imploding. Re the latter, I like Chris Masterjohn's take on the usefulness of the "ancestral" label rather than specifically "paleo" ... and I think that when the dust settles, there will be room in the big tent for a lot of folks.

Re the former, I think that Jimmy is, like me, trying to help other people as he solves his own weight issues. Alas, unlike me, he's really invested/branded as a LCer, so some of these discussions are challenging to some core fundamentals he holds pretty sacrosanct. I think he's just mostly trying to just make sense of it.

I know virtually nothing about Jimmy Moore's site and history, but this makes no sense to me. "Paleo" has a small amount of traction in the media as the Latest Wacky Fad those crazy hip urban kids are doing now. "Low-Carb" has a much more solid customer base, and has greater appeal in the so-called "Heartland" (it plays better in Peoria, for those of you old enough to remember that phrase).

Plus the product endorsement revenues from LC frankenfoods have to be far greater than whatever tiny smattering of organic ranches, etc. would be willing to participate.

Doesn't mean things can't change, but adopting "Paleo" as a specific business framework before it's even defined itself clearly and is still a fringe phenomenon would not qualify, in my book, as a safe move.
