[Meta] Paleohacks iphone app- what would you like to see?

Answered on September 12, 2014
Created May 31, 2011 at 12:28 AM

I'd love a paleohacks iphone app! The site is okay on my browser but it's kinda hard to navigate with so many questions. I'd like to see a "simpler" (better fitting/navigating for an iphone screen) format. What are your ideas and suggestions?

Actually, I have to retract my initial criticism above. Jake A said "mobile page" and having seen a mobile page in operation using this websites ( Q&A, badges, tags ) style etc of posting, I must say it does work, just as well as an app. I was in full browser thinking mode at the time I posted initially, a regular full view is painful, but a mobile view works very well. What would it take to get mobile activated on this site?

When I look at PH in my preferred iPhone browser, I get it as a Google mobile page, and I HATE it. It's much worse than just the regular page. And FWIW, I have little hands and great eyesight. I'd love an app.

I don't particularly need an app, but a mobile version of the website would be soooo nice. Most of the time I end up on the site after seeing a tweet on my iphone.

There's nothing against charging for your application. You have to buy a computer to use IE for browsing on it don't you?

That's quite hard to implement, Danielle. There is one way I can think of : by only showing the page when it's completely loaded, but I honestly think a dynamically loading page is better for users that aren't patient.

Another problem I often have is that while the page is still loading it keeps jumping around and I lose my spot, especially in posts where there are pictures but even just ones with posts. I'd love for a mobile or app to make this easier too.

Hey, I'm making the iPhone app free of course. It would be ridiculous to ask money for it (after all it's not my website). I guess I'll first have to contact Patrik about this, right?

Well I'll start working on it soon. I'll have to pay 99$ to work though, I currently don't have an iPhone developer account (I only have one for the mac app store).

Id use it. A mobile site would work too. Mostly just so I can easily search for opinions on questions/issues when Im in a store or out and about and a paleo question comes up - so search would be a very important factor, more important than say...up/down-voting

No way, I totally disagree. An app where everything is always perfectly formatted to the screen is always a thing on beauty for touch screen. Pinching, zooming, adjusting is fiddly and annoying Case in point -Tapatalk an app for regular web based forums (robb wolf's forum is tapatalk compatible) is so much nicer, easier and smoother than any browser - it's brilliant. I would pay the standard 2-3 dollars no problem at all for a good app.

I read and post with my iPhone maybe 50% of the time and it's fine. No need for me for another app clogging up my home screen.

Not iphone as I'm android powered, but I personally have trouble scrolling down the page and not accidentally flagging stuff.

So for me, it would be more user friendly if you couldn't accidentally flag things while trying to scroll.

Honestly an iPhone or android app is not necessary. A mobile page for this site would be just as good for users. The app would be helpful simply for developers to rake in cash money.

UPDATE Found a website running the same site Q &A software as paleohacks ( questions, tags, badges, votes) etc. (btw, what's it called, I cant seem to find the name of the software anywhere??) Here are some screen shots on the Android app they have made for it. Looks awesome. If we could get something like this with Paleohacks, that would be brilliant. Also the site 'stack overflow' has a mobile web version. If we could get that activated here, that would be brililant too. Smartphones are getting more and more prevalent, I am sure demand for apps or mobile will only increase

Definitely a good idea to make one - I would use it.

My suggestion for the potential author would be to study the free iPhone app called "Alien Blue", which is a client for the well-known reddit.com Internet forum. You will learn how the good forum client should look like and which features are nice to have.
