The heavy cream helps because of the fat content. I fast for 20 hours (following the Warrior Diet) and it helps.

Fasting in itself isn't going to do much for weight loss. What is your workout routine currently and how clean are you eating? Addressing these things will make a bigger difference than fasting IMO.

I use herbal teas, no sweeteners.

If drinking tea or coffee without anything in it does not feel right for you, you should add something (but, as Albert said, go for heavy cream). It will not really be fasting, but it's not like there's some magical 100% fasted state that you break as soon as you take just a few calories in.

To answer your question: Drinking black coffee, tea or water works for me. As caffeine supresses hunger, it can help you get through those final hungry hours you may encounter during the first weeks. Be sure not to overdo it though: Eventually, you want your body to suppress the hunger by itself, not rely on caffeine to do it for you.

anything with 50 calories or less will keep you in a fasted state

I agree with everyone else. I have been doing IF for the past two days and having coffee with heavy cream helps. But I also don't sip the whole thing down in one gulp. I take a few sips here and there. I do drink a lot of water. That helps :)

If you're scared of thyroid disease, you should look up causes. I don't think fasting is going to contributed to thyroidism. However, if you have a family history that's a different story. Both my mom and great aunt had thyroid problems. I haven't developed it yet and hopefully I won't.

It depends on what your IF goals are... but during IF you're supposed to no have any calories from food and milk has some, even if 50ml its a little bit only, it still is something, and milk protein is pretty insulinogenic... this does not mean that you cannot have some benefits of that pseudo IF strategy... if you want to stay keto or enhance fat burning ability, I'd better use heavy cream, butter or coconut oil or MCT oil... if you're after autophagy, I'd have nothing at all. You can forget about food and distract yourself by playing with some tea or other herbal teas, they can have some cleansing benefits. That all being said, not sure that really that 16/8h fast is such a great deal IMHO, I played with it and also with 12/12h... I like 12h fast (from early dinner to post morning run breakfast) I do better like this, if I do more than 13-14h of fast I can feel my cortisol rising too much, if that's not your case I guess it will be OK but if you feel anxious... I'd just eat :)
