Hi guys , I am looking to do a water fast next week both to cleanse my body and to lose weight. Do you think it is a good idea? How do I get round my mum , just because I didn't want a cereal bar this morning with my toast (I only eat toast normally) she told me not to starve myself and if I am then she is taking me to the doctors even though I eat 3 meals a day anyway most people don't even eat breakfast , what do I do?

You're at a fork in the road where the path you're considering leads to an eating disorder, malnutrition and possibly a very early death.

this isnt about proper paleo diet. Its about a young girls health and sanity. Id rather see her go vegan (well ok maybe not... but you're missing the forest for the trees here) then have some long term issue like bulimia develop because she's concerned about her physical appearance instead of focusing on changing her eating habits and mental thought patterns.

honestly if you are eating fresh, whole foods calories won't be a concern. it's almost impossible to overeat on fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains like quinoa, legumes, etc. eat 3 full meals a day. if you want some exercise along with that, i suggest joining a team of some sort with your friends, or dance for an hour a day, ride your bike to school or your friends house a few times a week. something fun. just be sure to eat when your hungry. if you don't adequately fuel your body now it will cause problems in the future. people your age fasting are doing damage to your body.

"Eat real food, mostly plants, and not too much." Ew, I never thought I'd have to read that shitty quote on a paleo site. A proper paleo diet is mostly meat and fat.

Hell no, that's a terrible idea. Eat the cereal bar and listen to your poor mother.

Not really wanting to lecture you but I think that you should take it easy for now on weight loss and focus to get into healthy lifestyle. That will give you the best long term. You're still young and very permeable to changes on lifestyle, also still growing and starving yourself may come with bad issues. In the end it's your decision but keep in mind that long-term good approaches will always be better and safer :)

Forgot to say. It seems that fasting does not work so well in women than in men. Just wanted to point out.

At age 15, it is more important to develop a healthy mind than body.

If you focus on making healthy food choices and exercise choices, the body you desire will follow naturally.

There are too many in the my generation and yours that are psychologically damaged from the media showing us what "ideal" body image is.

I for one know I really screwed myself up by trying to be thin and muscular. Now, Im paying for it. It wasnt worth years of deprivation, hours in the gym, not eating a certain food, to have 4 months of leanness. I did it for vanity, because I wanted to get the girls, but I dieted and exercised so hard I lost my sex drive!

Trust me, you dont want to end up bulimic or anorexic. Eat real food, mostly plants, and not too much. Keep focusing on being healthy and happy. Not skinny and crazy!

terrible idea, clara. at 15 your body is still growing and you need constant nutrition. fasting at your age is great way to end up with an eating disorder, damage to your organs, etc. that's not what you want. also since you're so young fasting would probably have a negative effect. you'd go into starvation mode and retain weight.

if you want to 'cleanse' your body eat more raw fruits and vegetables. if you don't want to eat processed cereal bars, see if your mother will make you eggs or some steal cut oats in the morning. if your family has a juicer try juicing up some kale, cucumber, an apple, and a lemon every morning. that along with some fresh fruit would be a great breakfast.

most importantly make sure you are getting enough calories from healthy sources. avocados, olive oil, healthy starches like sweet potatoes and zucchini and squash, fish, etc. you're growing so you need all of the healthy fat, nutrients, and minerals you can get so your body can develop properly. if you do that you'll be good.

Extended fasts are dangerous. People on here do IF, but it is generally for short periods of time.

While some on here may not agree, I have not seen any reliable studies showing that people need to "cleanse" their bodies. The body is generally pretty good at attaining homeostasis. Unless you have had some exposure to nuclear waste, really, and then you will be directed by a health care professional.

Eat well, whole foods, get some exercise, and maybe see a counsellor before you develop an eating disorder.

And don't listen to Hunter. Don't fast at all. Not until you are fully grown.

The people who say extending fasting is bad for you at this age are correct.

Do intermittent fasting, where you eat every other day.

If you feel that you really want to do longer fasting, do no more than 48 hour fasts.

Don't start extending fasting until 18.

Do not even dabble in dieting at your age... in fact... EVER! And that includes extreme water fasts like you mention. It will save you a life time of problems. Focus what's going on in your mind right now. Why do you think you need to even do this? Don't compare yourself to what people are doing around you. It might sound cheesy, but a healthy mind = a healthy body. Eliminate the negative self-talk and focus your attention on more important things in your life like making sure you are giving your body the nutrients it needs to develop into a strong and healthy woman and having fun with your friends etc etc.

You don't give many data about yourself so difficult to say. Based on this I'd just say that fasting should be a pretty normal thing and affordable for the not-very-metabolically-damaged person.

I'd start with restrictive fasting, if you eat 3 meals a day then you are most probably used to 16h fasts with night in-between, if not that long, you could make that your goal. Then see how if feels and you may go up occasionally.

Just try to not obsess with it, if you ever feel bad, stop it and have your meal. What's your goal with IF? I guess weight loss? Then I guess you already know that there are plenty of options here, slightly hypocaloric, junk food free eating with some exercise and active lifestyle should work really well longterm without the need for fasting or at least very hardcore fasting.
