Skipped Meal=Stinky Pee. Why?

Answered on August 19, 2014

So the only times my pee has a strong odor is when I skip a meal. Why is this/what am I smelling? Ketones? Toxins? Is my body detoxing more efficiently when I skip meals?

I am VLC right now. I normally eat fish, tahini, fermented veggies, olive oil, and some green like kale or brussel sprouts.

I agree with Sunny. I don't think it's ketones.

I don't think so. Though I eat a lot of salt, I also drink a lot of water and feel quite hydrated. It only happens after about 24 hours of not eating.

I eat lots of salt. More than anyone I know, in fact.

No, it hits me and I am forced to notice it; I don't try to smell it. And no, I hydrate well enough so that my pee is often clear.

You probably skipped out on just enough protein and carbs to kick you into ketosis.

Can you clarify? Do you mean just one skipped meal? Or a pattern of skipping meals for a week/longer, etc?

If you're only noticing it after skipping one meal, I'm guessing it's not ketosis kicking it...it takes a lot longer for it to affect the body. I would second the comments on hydration if this is more of an immediate effect after skipping one meal that you're noticing.

I think it's the tahini. The same thing just happened to me, and it's the only novel ingredient in my meals as of late.

If you are ULC and not taking in salt you could be dehydrated. Salt will help keep all that water you're drinking in your body since you don't have carboHYDRATEs to help do that. Shake that shaker.

How are you smelling you pee? Are you leaning into it? Does it look like it came from a radioactive waste site?

It could be ketones or dehydration. Are you consuming enough fluids when you skip that meal?

Both my breath and urine odors are affected by ketosis.

Sounds like ketones to me, though you'd more likely get it via breath. Or maybe some sort of detox where you're releasing stored toxins from fats, which you don't normally do if you have an intake of calories.
