Intermittent Fasting Eating Window Contains Only Neolithic Agents. What to do???

Answered on August 19, 2014

I have been doing IF for a few days with the 16/8 format. I am at a work event away from home and while some meals are made up of meats and veggies, others are all wheat, sugar and grains. One concern of mine has been not getting enough calories during my eating windows, so I am hesitant to skip the lunches (breaking the fast), even if it is made up of wheat, sugar and grains. So my question is am I better off skipping lunch and waiting until dinner, or just chalk it up to a loss and look at it as a cheat? ??I am pretty hungry.??

@Wozza - It just seemed like a suggestion? I don't know! I was kind of building on the other comments. :)

Where in Tahoe are you that there are no grocery stores? I lived there for 6 years and there should be Raley's or Lucky's there somewhere, even if you have to go there late in the evening to buy stuff for the next day?

Good suggestion. It worked out that way.

I'm sure the turkey chili is slightly better, even if there is sugar in the base, it's not wheat. Some Paleos even eat legumes. I know it's weird to get used to initially, but asking people for exceptions is okay. Can you ask the cafe to make you some hard boiled eggs? You may feel weird asking, but it's probably not a big deal to them. Let this be a lesson for your next trip. Planning ahead is essential to eating healthy, no matter what protocol you are following. If you end up eating crap, don't stress about it, you'll recover. I wouldn't use it as an excuse to do it, though.

I'm in Lake Tahoe, but am working all day and not really allowed to leave. There is a cafe here with a $19 chicken sandwich. Looks like lunch will be turkey chili, not the pasta I thought it was. Any better?

If you told them you were allergic to wheat, they would have to figure something out. Gluten free is getting pretty popular. If they are serving sandwiches, eat the meat/veggies, if they are serving pizza eat the toppings. I have been to a lot of these corporate type events and there is usually at least a fruit platter or salad or SOMETHING edible. I would not eat grains because of no other options. I would skip the meal.

How long is the conference? I wouldn't think that going without food for a longer period of time would be particularly harmful. Lots of folks do a longer fast occasionally. Is there a hotel gift shop? Do they have dark chocolate?

If you can't get to a grocery store to stock up on supplies, see if the hotel can hook you up. Many hotels serve hard boiled eggs in the morning. Order two dozen a day if you have to. Don't go hungry. Don't use this as an excuse to eat crap.

Seriously. Bring your own food. I went with a group of friends to see a rock show this week. I wasn't at all ashamed to bust out my sack of emergency pistachios and hard boiled eggs at the pizza parlor. Mangia! Mangia!

And we are in the middle of nowhere. The lunches provided are really the only option.

This doesn't even need to have a question mark. BRING YOUR OWN FOOD.

shift your eating window to something more convenient when you can eat the foods you want. don't be so strict about 16/8 when it becomes inconvenient. food quality is MUCH more important than meal timing.

Save something edible from breakfast or dinner for the next day's lunch.
