Intentially starving myself-but not really

So I think I'm going insane. First the stats: 32, female paleo since July 2013, lost 80 lbs, stuck here at 239. Day used to consist of 3 slices of bacon 2 eggs breakfast, chicken thigh or chicken Caesar salad lunch, either roast, steak, salmon, chicken breast and veggies for dinner. As far as workout I walk an hour a week (14-30 mins a day) and dance heavily as "play" 30 mins 3 times a week while fasted. I hadn't started lifting yet.

Lately I have been either not hungry, or hungry but don't want to eat. I'm exhausted, I can't sleep, and my heart goes a mile a minute when its time for bed. My blood pressure isn't high, and I'm not sure what's going on. I haven't been eating breakfast all week, I will force a salad on myself just to eat something and that's about all I want. This past weekend I ate a half cup of pistachios and that was it. Steak was available, carrots, celery, onions were available, I even sprung for chicken and steamed rice from the Chinese place. None of it appetizing. This morning I cooked and threw away bacon.

Should I eat anyway? Should I continue to workout like this? I've heard IF is bad for women but good at the same time but bad...its like eggs or something. But what if you just find nothing appealing?

"I gained a pound" -> STOP WATCHING THE SCALE. Weight is the worst measurement of health that exists, it's just adding to your stress.

So I have to believe you are on the right track. I saw green apples in the cafeteria at work and by golly that's all I wanted. Ended up eating two. I don't keep fruit in my house as I'm trying to lose weight and hasn't had any since fall. So I ate that and had turkey, bacon, lettuce and tomato for lunch and woke up this morning feeling great. I gained a pound that I now have to figure out how to fix but there was something in that apple that I guess I needed, probably the carbs as I don't think green apples are that high in sugar. Either way I'm much better now. Thanks all

I agree completely with the ketosis comment, ketosis has an effect which pretty much makes your appetite disappear which can be effective for fast weight loss but at the same time everyone needs to eat, get some carbs ;)

Have you been in for a checkup lately? Ovarian cysts and tumors can cause a weird decrease in appetite too.

Pooping okay? If not, I'm pretty sure an intestinal blockage could cause this feeling.

You're right - she's definitely not ready for consistent fasting. But I do think sometimes when you have this total loss of appetite it's your body telling you to take a break. No need to feel like you HAVE to keep eating. I went through this a few times on my way down from a much heavier weight.

Also you may not be ready to be fasting. I know for me it caused adrenal burnout

I think most of us go through periods like this. No, I don't think you should force yourself to eat. You have access to food, you want to eat, you're just not feeling it when you try. Make some bone broth to sip, make some other soups and not really food like food, and give it a bit to return. If you start vomitting or such, then see your doctor. Take some vitamins.

Your cortisol is high. This happens in times of stress, including starvation. Your body isn't letting you sleep, because its keeping you alert to look for food. You could also be hypothalamic (hypothyroid). Both will stall weight loss because your body is trying very hard to hold onto its fat reserves

Eat a minimum of 60g of carbs a day, then increase it till you see an improvement - you could need 100g a day. Try and eat more calories, too

Carbs.Fruit/Starch (especially sweet potato). Your probably in deep ketosis. Puts you in a fight or flight state. High cortisol is a good way to reamain overweight.

Too low carb can disrupt your hormones and effect your thyroid. I think this is "normal" in that other people have experienced it, but I don't think it's necessarily "good." Are you dropping weight really fast during this time? If you are, you could 'ride the wave' for another week or so, but I don't think you want to be in this state for too long. This is paleo, not Atkins. Go eat some fruit :) and read up on "The Perfect Health Diet"

I would suggest you eat more fresh vegetables, especially for breakfast, instead of bacon; tomato, cucumber, lettuce, peppers, broccoli, spinach. Have more variations with your breakfast. Surprise your body. There is lots of good blogs on recipes online. I also suggest sauerkraut for the probiotics. Every day. Chacnge your workout. Crossfit is very effective, and you can do that in a box or on your own inside, but preferably outside. There too, surprise the body and do different exercises. But do something every day! It only takes 21 times to make a habit! Good luck!

I agree with Crowbar that many of us go through phases like this. I would just say to respect it. Let yourself do a fast. I've never come out of a fast NOT wanting to eat! I know the fear is that if we stop eating it's going into eating disorder territory, but I think there is a natural waxing and waning of hunger.

Now throwing away bacon - that has to be a crime!
