Confused about Intermittent Fasting: Am I doing it everyday?

Answered on August 19, 2014

In an earlier thread, the consensus seemed to be that an IF would be 14 hours for a woman and 16 hours for a man.

I eat dinner at about 6 p.m. I eat breakfast between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. I did the math and that's 15-16 hours each day without food. So am I doing an IF everyday? And, if so, is that healthy? (My lunch is more of a snack at about 2 p.m.)

Thanks so much everyone.

Eh... it seems like ok content except the author seems to have a topless muscle man fetish. Got any other pictures?

if you are consuming real foods that meet your nutritional needs then it really couldn't be unhealthy could it?

Thanks Sage. I'm eating strict Paleo the rest of the time -- no eggs, dairy, or nightshades though because of an autoimmune disorder.

Are you worried about the definition? As you say, you're fasting for 15-16 hours. Some people consider a daily 8 hour eating window as intermittent fasting, and they tend to do that all the time, so yes you could be said to be IFing every day if you fast for around 16 hours or more every day. There is no reason why it need be unhealthy, but it very much depends what you eat the rest of the time.

I think the information on the links and references provided shows a wide range of IF practice. As with all things, we try and we see what works for us individually; there is no "one way" or even "one healthy way" that applies to everybody.

Go to Leangains.com and you'll find thorough answers to your questions. Really, it's an exhaustively good source. If you end not exhausted and seek to learn more still, Google "John Berardi IF." You might also consider searching this site using "IF" and "intermittent fasting."

Good primer on it: http://www.romanfitnesssystems.com/blog/intermittent-fasting-101/

"...one study out of the University of Utah showed that people who fasted just one day per month were 40% less likely to suffer from clogged arteries."

It's up to you what you do. You can eat every other day, or eat in a 'window' every day, or eat breakfast and lunch one day, then dinner the next, then back to breakfast and lunch etc. Or you can just take a day off a week, or one a month, or two a month, or just skip a meal when you're not hungry.

Start slow, find something that fits into your lifestyle and works for you. Definitely don't worry about whether you're doing it perfectly. And just don't worry about restricting calories when you are eating (though stick to good nutritious paleo foods!) and listen to your body and it'll be healthy.
