Ido Portal paleo eating?

I was watching an interview with him on youtube and he says that paleo should consist of:

3 meals a day

100-250g lean meat

2-3 servings of leafy greens

He says on one of his blog/facebook posts that we should be wary of fructose and the havoc they wreak on the body and beware of the omega 6 in nuts and seeds but avoid seeing these through a straw. Thinks the reason most paleo people fail is because they try and cut fruit and nuts out year round and then slip and binge on grains.

Says people on paleo need to earn their fruit. So for example after heavy glycolytic training like running or boxing or resistance exercise.

I know most of you probably know who Ido is or have heard of him from robb wolf talking about him.

He released his bloodwork after 14 years of paleo and his results were superb and he posted them as a challenge to vegans to match him and none could.

This created so many angry vegan blogs calling him an asshole and mean. But for me it really amazed me he could be so healthy from what he ate.

How on earth does he get all hit vitamin and mineral needs from just lean cuts of meat and leafy green veggies?

I mean he has like 1 piece of fruit post workout and when doing hours of boxing or gymnastics or capo era a day he has 1 shake consisting of 30g protein and 30g carbs.

Most books and blogs on paleo I have read suggest more fruit, more variety. Especially for active people yet Ido is thriving off this diet. Is he unique and just genetically gifted or is this something all active people could pull off?

I'll be moving from Southern California to Northern Oregon in about a month. I worry deeply that I'll have a hard time sourcing enough ripe fruit up there to keep it up. I can adapt situationally though. Maybe I'll just eat more tubers and sea greens...

Vegans hate it when it's pointed out that there are other ways to get healthy. Paleos also hate this. Jack Lalanne wasn't either, and ate a lot of fruit, but you can't say he didn't work for every piece of it.

So lots of lean meat & leafy greens? It seems he advocates lots of exercise/movement aswell, so low fat & low carb with lots of exercise, sounds like an ideal ApoE4/Ancestral gene diet (if the HFLC ApoE4 CVD risk is true) although it would be very hard to eat that much lean meat & reach calorie goals realistically!

@Methodician

I think his basic stance is high fruit high omega 6 paleo is still good for you. But if you want to be your leanest, your most functioning in his eyes, cutting out high amounts of fruits, nuts and completely removing alcohol is best.

I think that might be because he does lots of gymnastics and bodyweight movement that works best at your leanest. I know the heavier i got the worse i performed movement.

Overall though i think you and Ido could both be right for different situations. I love fruit but the stuff near me tastes crap and is clearly not ripe but almost painted ripe. I buy reduced fresh or frozen berries for smoothies.

I haven't read Ido's stuff but my knee-jerk reaction is that this is just another zealot touting a one-size-fits-all approach because something extreme worked for him.

Yes, it depends on the person. I personally thrive on a diet high in fruit, tubers, squashes, cooking oils, eggs, fish, offal, and fatty meats. Lean meat doesn't sit right with me, nor does excessive greens. I'm not athletic and exercise just enough to get by. My blood work is awesome; I'm lean and strong and have boundless energy. During the winter I tend to eat lower carb due mainly to availability (maybe 150g). Then in the summer carbs jump back up to about 250g/day average (with days well over 350 grams). This just works for me while a diet too high in meat and greens makes me feel lethargic and bloated.

Experiment for yourself. As long as you find nutritional balance, do what's working. For me that can be up to 8 fruits (ample variety) per day in mid-summer and several potatoes/day in winter, along with the usual paleo foods.

Ido portals eating method works. He eats mostly lean meats and greens, with strategic refeeds on rice/tubers (I beleive he said about 2x per week), with fruit after every workout. This is a fine diet. IMHO most paleo followers eat wayy too much fat, not enough protein, not enough vegetables and then wonder why they are sick, perform like shit, are fat or skinny fat. Most people just don't have the will or the want to actually eat to have a great physique. Virtually everyone who performs like an athlete and looks like one and is healthy eats high protien, MODERATE/sufficient fat, and carbs making up the rest with a wide range of tolerance. Virtually all do eat carbs though, and choose to cycle them for best aesthetic results.

Ido is awesome.

Remember that there are many meat only cultures out there. If you eat tail to nose (i.e. the whole animal, not just muscle meat), you can get all your vitamins. Adrenals are a good source of Vitamin C for example.

Vilhjalmur Stefansson did this experiment for us already.

Some of this depends on our genome, for most SAD eaters who find want to lose fat and find VLC paleo works well, likely they have the genes to lose fat when eating fat. Others, do better on higher carbs. http://rockstarresearch.com/these-5-genes-predict-...
