Question on SIBO symptoms

Answered on August 19, 2014

Luckily my appointment with the G.I specialist is only a few days away. But in the meantime, im still curious about what SIBO's symptoms are, and if i guessed right ( if i have SIBO)

I've got:

chronic constipation ( 1 on the bristol stool chart)

stomach grumbles

low energy/fatigue

innapropriate hunger at random times ( I am eating enough)

Can't eat brocolli ( or similar vegies) or slow cooked meals/stews without getting super bloated, pains and

acid reflux ( not that bad though)

Can't think straight, takes long time to process things. In a daze

Kept me from sleeping well for a week, in the last two weeks

Full body itching on and off for 2 days. ( thought it was a sign of candida but it went away)

This is all kinda screwing up my ability to learn at school :/

Does this sound like SIBO?

If so, how does it give me fatigue? ( I now get enough sleep, about 8 hours )

Thankyou

I think whats a better indicator, is that if you get bloating, diarehha, consipation, burping - and they respond to negatively fodmaps, carbohyrates or positively to anti-biotics.

^ The breath test is not 100% accurate. In fact even a direct small intestinal culture is not 100% accurate because we cant culture 90% of gut bacteria. I dont think a negative breath test rules out SIBO.

Most medical doctors don't believe in leaky gut either. Or low stomach acid.

I would suggest you try the paleo autoimmune protocol for a few weeks, because there are various possibilities: eggs, nuts/coconut, nightshades. But especially casein can hinder bowel movement and induce constipation. I would also try to cut out all dairy except ghee. And up your fat intake. Also you might want to have a look here: http://ibs.about.com/od/ibsfood/a/The-FODMAP-Diet.htm

Thankyou for your responce! I am part lactose intolerant and no difference occurs in symptoms if i stop having yogurt or if i continue to have it. I don't eat any grains. But because of having such a reaction from a majority of vegetables ive added rice crackers and more potato, which seemed too improve my temper and mood. At the moment because of this i'm only eating dark green leafy vegies, berries( not too much) eggs, meat, coconut, yogourt, potato, rice crackers and dark chocolate.

I also had a positive breath test for SIBO. My symptoms were daily diarrhea, bloating, and extremely foul smelling gas. The antibiotic they gave me didn't help, but going grain free did.

I have been breathe tested for SIBO and it was positive. My symptoms are strictly digestive (no brain fog). I have burping, bloating, and gas (from hell). 3 rounds of antibiotics, at least 6 rounds of natural style antibiotics, dietary changes, you name it I have tried it. The symptoms remain the same. Just get the test before you get to involved in worrying if you have it. Also get a test for candida. (I don't have it).

Indeed that might be SIBO. But I guess there's another underlying cause. Maybe you're allergic or sensitive to some food which gives you constipation. The allergic reaction would also explain your fatigue. On the other hand, long lasting constipation promotes SIBO.

Can you tell me something about your diet? Especially grains and dairy?

the FODMAP link will be a great place to start. Two foods that seem to give you a problem (milk and broccoli) both contain sugars that your body may be having trouble breaking down. This allows the sugar to enter the large intestine where bacteria feed off of it. One believed cause of SIBO is overgrowth of these bacteria caused by the supply of food (sugars), which allow the bacteria to proliferate to such a degree that some make their way into the small intestine, hence small bacterial overgrowth. I personally was not familiar with fructose intolerance (addressed by the FODMAP diet) until recently. Apparently a large part of the population experiences this intolerance, yet most people are generally only familiar with lactose intolerance

Except for itching, I've experienced those symptoms as well and have been diagnosed w/SIBO. Stomach rumbles, I look 4 mo. pregnant by 4 P.M., upper ab and chest pressure/bloating, HuGE burping, and sometimes soooo hungry, sometimes not at all. I had every test in the world before the drs. figured this out. Then they kicked me to the curb after nothing worked long-term to cure it. Antibiotics of any kind make me feel totally normal, but after a couple of weeks every symptom comes back. Mega probiotics and enzymes are helping, but the low/no carb diets only weakened me, and I tried them for months. Small meals, no fruits to speak of, lower carbs are best for me. Have tried Chinese meds, all the herbs: L-Glutamine is good, Triphala very good, and peppermint caps when flare occurs. 2 years into this.

Try a chinese formula it will knock it out in three to four weeks, Chinese medicine is 1000's of years old I think it has been perfected during that time western medicine is not that old and don't get me wrong I think western medicine has its place My experience led me to believe chinese medicine seems more clean, natural and potent . nature, **Huang Lian (Rhizoma. Coptidis) is one of the strongest herbs to clear toxins This what you do find the best Chinese medicine dr in town and book an appointments, they will create a formula for you. All the formulas Ive ever taken have had zero side effects and western medicine I always have serious side effects. In fact Benadryl sends me into cardiac arrest symptoms I was fortunate to be next to hospital when I took a Bendadryl I don't think I would be writing this now! My symtoms chills, fever. pain on the right side about an inch to the right of the belly button I had lightheaded feeling, tired, pressure/ discomfort in abdomen and a facial rash. After western medicine could not help me I found a ND who had me take the breath test - positive so it is SIBO although the dr never could figure out wny I had a fever, chills having a fever chills and increased heart rate at times is med school 101 it is an BLOOD INFECTION perhaps caused by and infected appendix! I insisted on a blood culture and to look for a blood infection staph/bacteria it could be chronic appendicitis . I'm not convinced about the SIBO diagnosis, and apparently every medical dr I talk to most do not believe that it is an actual diagnosis ...so the two schools stand divided. A good ND could probaly also treat you.
