Lactobacillus Acidophilus & milk kefir? Is it tolerated with leaky gut & Insomnia?

Hi All.

I'm suffering from leaky gut & IBS since when I was 15 (I'm 33 now).

I went Paleo on July 1, 2012 and things are slowly improving although I still have several concerns. The main one is Insomnia. I can never sleep. I checked thyroid and adrenal glands in the past and everything seems to be ok.

My question though regards Kefir and in particular the lactobacillus acidophilus.

I've read controversial information about it. Some say it's good to increase the good bacteria, while others claim lactobacillus acidophilus (within Kefir) is not well absorbed when the leaky gut syndrome is present.

I started to take a few spoons a day of goat milk kefir a few days ago. No effects so far (bad or good).

I would like to have your opinion about it.

My diet is Paleo/Primal/GAPS/High-FODMAP-Free (NO nightshades). I mean, I mainly eat whole meat (turkey, chicken, veal, lamb, beef, red meat, deer plus other fame) and fish (mostly sardines, mackerel, sometimes wild caught salmon from Pacific ocean, tuna) organic eggs (directly from the farmer. I reintroduced them recently after a couple months without them), take Omega-3 supplements daily (by Barry Sears), few vegetables (cooked, otherwise I can't digest them except Avocado), very very little fruits (only berries), no Nuts (for the moment), and plenty of turmeric, ginger + a daily cup of organic green tea leaves and licorice. I also drink a cup per meal of bones broth (I'm waiting for Kombucha to try it) plus a bottle of filtered natural water. Recently I'm taking a spoon (10 minutes before every meal) of apple-cider vinegar to improve digestion.

I use organic, unrefined coconut oil to cook and raw olive oil for dressing.

I tried also Sauerkraut but soon after I eat them, my intestine feels very bad. I used other gluten-free probiotics but nothing has really changed in months (that's why I stopped with these supplements and started taking goat milk kefir).

Every day I spend at least 30-45 minutes in the sun to get the necessary Vitamin D.

My calories intake is about 2.000 (sometimes a bit more): 50% of good fats, 30% protein and 20% carbs. I tried to increase the carbs (eating more boiled potatoes) but the inflammation skyrocketed (I could barely walk for the knees pain).

My height is 5.9 and my weight is 130 pounds. I'm a male and I'm very skinny. Regardless of what I eat I don't gain weight (for malabsorption, I guess). I would love to, but the more I eat the more pounds I lost. This is just insane although everybody dreams to lose weight.

I have inflammation pretty much everywhere (arthritis, back pain soon after the meal, eczema, psoriasis, asthma, knees pain, frequent urination at night, hair loss - being the only in one my family, acne, dry skin, etc..). As you can imagine, my life is quite difficult mainly for the lack of sleep. I'm a zombie.

Everyday I struggle to walk about an hour, which (with much effort) I do. I also try some primal exercises, but I don't always have enough energy to do it constantly.

I'm not feeling depressed but just "sick and tired of being sick and tired" (cit.).

Few months ago, I left my job, the metropolis I was living in and went back home in the countryside. No stress, nothing to worry about except my IBS & Insomnia.

I've made any possible medical test, tried many doctors (in Italy) and very little drugs/medicines which anyway never worked. Same with homeopathy, agopuncture, kinesiology, Felden Krais, Plantar Reflexology, Osteopathy, Phytotherapy etc.. Then I tried Yoga, Meditation, Re-birthing, EFT - Emotional Freedom Technique, Bach Flowers and other para-guru, magic & religious activities, just because I was desperate. In the end I went to the Psychologist and this honest lady, after the first meeting said: there's nothing I can do. You're ok and I can't heal your gut. Nothing ever worked.

All the medical tests I did were OK (I mean, I'm healthy, thank God). Colonoscopy, Gastroscopy and many other. The only one confirming I had a strong Dysbiosis in my intestine was the IG stool test from Metametrix. But for that I had to ship my poo (sorry!) to the US all the way from Italy. Since in this country nobody offers such a detailed test. At the same time my kinesiologist found I had intestinal candidiasis (although that "science" seems a bit empirical to me). While my personal doctor, after viewing my Metametrix test results (showing Dysbiosis) commented: it's all bulls***! ;-(

(Italy is plenty of great doctors, but unfortunately, through my experience I haven't been lucky enough to find a good one to heal me yet!). My main healing sources are online: Robb Wolf, Mark Sisson & Chris Kresser plus some other.

I have been following this Paloe/Primal protocol for a couple of weeks now (before I was "just"Paleo but doing certain things wrong without knowing). My bloating has mostly reduced. Still have some constipation but not much. It's just now Insomnia killing me.

I tried also intermittent fasting and the warrior diet years ago and recently but it seems that adding more stress (by skipping meals) under these conditions is not beneficial for my health. So I eat 3 solid meals every single day of my life.

I know it takes time and I will continue this way, no matter what at least until the end of the year.

Thanks a lot from whoever will join the conversation.

P.S..I was vegetarian for about 15 years during which period things worsened. I'm not saying this is because of the vegetarian diet (although I read several articles about how being a veg can be dangerous, in some cases, for your gut).

P.S.Until I turned 20, I had several cavities in my teeth, all filled with mercury. I removed some of the mercury fillings recently, but not all of them. I see that mercury can be one of the many reasons preventing from gut healing. Is that true?

Greetings from sunny Italy.

Michael.

You have mercury poisoning! You need to remove your amalgams and start mercury chelation (removal of mercury from your organs). Then your symptoms will slowly disappear.

I've been thru the same thing, so I can relate :(

What kind of insomnia do you have? Trouble falling asleep or trouble staying asleep? What is your state of mind when you're not sleeping but trying to?

Hi Jeanne, thanks for your answer. So far, things have improved very much since I started a ketogenic paleo diet with no fruit and vegetables. Just some avocado here and there. All the rest is fat (mainly) and proteins. No more bloating, gas, pain. Still have some little problems, but tolerable. I'm supplementing already with Vitamins D and C. WIll check the Bs. What do you mean by high doses? Can you give me an example? Thanks, Michael.

I had endoscopy but the result was negative to gluten. In any case I've been gluten freeform the last 4 months and although certain things have improved, insomnia and IBS are still there. In any case, they say that only 1 out of 8 celiac test are positive. The other 7 (still allergic or intolerant) are (false) negative. In the end my Metametrix test said I was very intolerant to gluten. Plus my sister is celiac (certified) with positive test results.

Absolutely!!! Store bought has no bacteria left, it is all dead. It is very easy to make your own. In my culture we add shredded carrot to sauerkraut, it is much tastier!

I had blurry vision as well. That's what gluten (and nutritional deficiencies) do for you.

Just so you know - my symptoms were 100% consistent with gluten intolerance/sensitivity. Have you had endoscopy done? Are you sure you are not celiac? If you are interested, I can send you two more videos on it - very informative.

Yes, it was store bought. Should I try preparing it myself?

When you tried sauerkraut, was it storebought? I tried storebought a while ago too and it caused terrible bloating and indigestion. Turns out it was pasteurized. I just recently started eating raw sauerkraut and my body seems to like it. Just curious.

Ha, I also have cramps to my right calf (always the same). This happens soon after every meal and gets more intense at night. Also this improved after going Paleo. But it's still there. Especially at night.

Yes, pretty similar symptoms. Tossing and turning (I often get up cause I can't stay in the bed anymore). Night sweats as well (not every night). And then strong irritation to the eyes. Especially when I close them; they start burning (so I have to open them again) Before going Paleo I had a deep pain in the right side of my abdomen. It was like having a knife into it (small intestine). At nigh was awful I couldn't even sit. After going Paleo this pain simply disappeared so I can stay in the bed (comfortably) with no problems although I can't sleep.

I have tried four different probiotics before I found one that actually works. The pill stuff did nothing for me. In my country they sell probiotics at the pharmacy and they keep them refrigerated. Only one brand was actually working. It was in little jars and it was the cheapest. I think you should give probiotics another try, but do not buy the same brand, buy something refrigerated and check them if they are alive prior to consumption.

Thanks a lot VB for your precious recommendations. I read many things about being vegetarian and I agree with most of them (Beyond Broccoli Book is a good one). I took probiotics in the past but never made any effect on my gut. That's why, after reading about the miraculous Kefir I decided to try it (the milk kefir). I read about the water kefir too, but idea of adding sugar and dried fruits (very bad for me) didn't convince me to try. But after your considerations I will try water kefir (on ebay, can find some). I've tried several naturopath with no success. Watching the suggested video. Thx!

Hi Aseafish and thanks for your comment. Actually I reintroduced eggs recently after a long stop. It seems I digest them very well as I had no improvements earlier while eggs-free. No nightshades since July 1st. I tried Saurkraut but every time I eat a bit of them my bloating starts again from scratch. Thanks again & will consider your suggestions. Michael.

For now anyway, while leaky gut issues are causing you trouble, you would probably be well served by eliminating the eggs and avoiding all dairy products. You can get probiotics through other raw fermented foods. I know eggs are a rough food to avoid since they're a common ingredient as well as a main part of a dish. Try it for 90 days. Stay away from the nuts, which you're already doing, and nightshades for about the same length of time. The idea, of course, is to give your gut some healing time.

oh michael, i feel your pain. i really do. my diet is just like yours right now- very strict, but i also don't do eggs- they make me so sick. i do drink kombucha and eat raw saurkraut. i am going to start making my own yogurt, too. i take scdophilus probiotic by GI Pro Health. it's straight up acidophilus with no fillers. so far, i haven't noticed any negative effects of it. i'm really trying to balance out my gut since it's a disaster. i also have a lot of sleeping problems. i attribute it to my severe anemia. i just have such numbness/tingling/restless legs. uhh such a nightmare. i can't exercise nearly as long as you but i would keep that up. it's so good you have the energy to do it. i am just so drained. i can sometimes force myself to do 20 minutes a day, but that's it.

Michael, I got very sick too and had to quit my job. I went from one doctor to another and all my blood work checked out fine so the doctors could not figure out what was wrong with me. The medicine I got from my doctors made me feel even sicker. Now I am on my own, trying to heal my wounds and I am doing pretty well.

I had most of your symptoms except for weight loss.

Sorry to tell you this, but being a vegetarian for 15 years greatly contributed to your ailing health. You can read the book "The Vegetarian Myth" or watch a presentation by the author. It is surprising how many Paleo people are former vegetarians and vegans. I was not one though - I was on chocolate and ice cream diet pretty much.

One thing that I would definitely recommend is watching a video by Sally Fallon Link and getting some vitamins that she recommends: http://www.greenpasture.org/public/Products/ButterCodLiverBlend/index.cfm

Also, you can drink water kefir (it is called differently in different countries). The difference with regular kefir is that it does not require milk, only sugar and some dried fruit and there is an international sharing circle - it grows so rapidly, people will loan you some for free.

Make sure to buy real life probiotics from a refrigerated section and cook all your meats on the lowest setting possible to preserve all the enzymes.

Find a good naturopath, a person who actually knows how to treat your problem. Maybe there are naturopathic doctors in Italy?

As for getting a better sleep... Gosh, I wish I could help you. I was sleep deprived for so long - but I sleep like a baby now. It took me about 3 months to see the difference. I know exactly what you are talking about. What worked for me is just eliminating gluten and eating healthier (see Sally Fallon's video). And tons and tons of probiotics. I hope you are taking probiotics, right? Make sure they are gluten and additives free.

A WORD OF WARNING: IF YOU HAVE SIBO OR SUSPECT TO HAVE SIBO OR DON"T KNOW WHAT SIBO IS - don't do probiotics!!!

Good luck!!!

I've read that bifidobacteria is a better strain for repopulating your gut with good bacteria, especially if you have leaky gut, because it comprises 70% of the bacteria. Take a bifido pill with L-Glutamine 15 minutes before each meal (to ensure maximal absorption) and that should help heal your leaky gut.

Hi Jeanne,

thanks for your answer.

Hi Michael....I feel bad for you and know exactly how you feel...my daughter and I are experiencing many of your symptoms. I have a few recommendations for you. First of all, It's very important that you get your self a good multi vitamin. Your leaky gut is responsible for your seemingly vitamin deficient symptoms...I can't stress enough the importance of high doses of vitamin Bs, especially b-12 and vitamins C, D. Your leaky gut is causing the deficiency in these plus other must have multis...folate etc. we are also on the paleo diet and have noticed that we are feeling better. I've done lots of research on this syndrome and know that it takes time to fully heal. We have been experiencing ups and downs but the ups seem to weigh out the downs. Stick with the paleo diet but watch out for the nuts and nightshades (peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, etc.) as these can cause inflammation to your leaky gut....good luck to you and everyone else out there that has this debilitating and epidemic condition....God Bless...
