Been abusing osmotic laxatives and magnesium citrate for about 2 years.Doctors stated colon muscle motility disorder. When I stop taking them I am badly constipated and feels like everything's stuck even in the stomach.Need real help or I think I will die.

Miralax was a godsend for about 6 months of alleviating chronic constipation for me.

Oh no... I don't know then. But magnesium does not work for me. I have tried fifteen different remedies - nothing works.

Is this to say that magnesium citrate is habit forming? I've seen the same question addressed before with claims that it is not.

They usually suggest weaning off of them, and not stopping cold turkey.

Some things that have helped me:

--Tapering off, depending on how much you were taking

--Lots of water throughout the day

--Light exercise

--Eating small meals across the day, rather than big meals

--Miralax is a non-stimulant and will help ease you into being laxative-free

--Increasing fiber, but not large amounts of it at once or it will cause gastrointestinal distress

It WILL be uncomfortable. There is no getting around that. You WILL experience discomfort and anxiety, but in the end, it will be worth it.

Good luck

When you stop taking them, eat more fat. I don't know how much you'd need exactly, because everybody is different, but it is far more effective than fiber. Too much will give you the runs. You could probably start with three tablespoons of some kind of fat and see if that has the desired effect. Gurgling noises are an early indicator that it is working.

Drinking bone broth, a favorite among GAPS/Paleo/Weston A. Price people, has a laxative effect as well, at least on me it does. Oh, and coffee.

In addition to the other suggestions, I have two.

  1. Get help to make it through don't try it yourself
  2. Get some serious probiotics. All the laxitive abuse likely destroyed your gut flora.

Try some MCT Oil...can easily be added to food, coffee etc and works well to get the "body moving". Just start with 1/2 tbspn though! (slowly work up from there).

It's a good energy booster and can even help with fat burning too.

I have never used or abused laxatives, but right now I am dealing with constipation because I cannot use my usual methods. I am trying to recover from SIBO and my usual things won't work.

This is what definitely works when you DO NOT HAVE SIBO:

  1. raw beets

  2. soaked prunes in water, prune juice

  3. figs

  4. kiwi before bed

  5. raw vegetables, tons of them

I have tried magnesium citrate and my body totally refuses it. So I will go with my body.

Right now I am trying raw carrot juice and a herbal medicine. I will let you know if it works.
