Pigeons? Rats? urban game?

Answered on August 19, 2014

Is it safe/legal to hunt critters like rats or pigeons and other "urban game"? or is it best to be avoided since they might be dirty and eat SAD garbage (but then when you think about it, most commercial animals also eat a diet of SAD garbage) or they might have consumed poisons or have parasites? Any thoughts? As I said in my Earthworm post, it would be super Grok-like, or am I just nuttier than raw vegan paleo cheesecake for even thinking about it?

And rabbits are much harder to kill.. chickens easy, but when we started raising bunnies on the farm.. yikes they are sturdy! Oh and they scream in pain.. so we resorted to a small caliber gun to do the deed.

I've always wondered about raising rabbits or guinea pig pigs for meat since you can't raise chickens in the city. Unfortunately rabbits are cuter than chickens.

why not? You can make a cheap coop if you have a window sill.

yeah rabbits and guinea pigs are an alternative. because you can keep them in cages, but honestly if you form a regular feeding/housing relationship with the birds they won't have as much interaction with garbage sites as people here are suggesting. Of course you will be feeding them Paleo style right? bugs, grasses and the like, not grains. ;)

I would not, unless it was one of my neighbor's homing pigeons, which she would probably object to. =) Since I don't eat Cheetos, I don't want my food to consume Cheetos. Personal preference.

As to the legality of it all, it's going to depend on your locale and how you plan to capture and/or kill the rats or rats with wings.

Wouldn't they technically be grain fed? Or just... filth fed?

I would worry about disease and poor diet and health of the animals. Heck my dog ate a bird that he captured in the yard of my suburban house and I was worried about him. Pigeons that eat trash and are exposed to auto waste every day aren't safe to eat IMHO.

Since both rats and pigeons are non- native species I shouldn't think there would be any legal issues. But do you really want to eat them?
