Resting after a big meal

Today I had a big hamburger and a plate of sweet potato fries at a restaurant and felt really drowsy afterwards. I started to chalk it up to food overload and possibly additives in the meal, when it occurred to me that this happens in nature all the time... lions gorging after a big kill, hunter gatherers feasting for days (on rare occasions, of course, not constantly) and then rolling around the ground, not moving.

So what do you think? "Natural", or not?

Maybe if you have metabolic syndrome or the start of it. A normal carb meal shouldn't put you to sleep if your healthy.

Orexin neurons, found in the hypothalamus, help to maintain wakefulness. When you eat a meal that significantly raises your blood glucose (and the hamburger bun and sweet potato fries would DEFINITELY do that), the high blood glucose inhibits the firing rate of orexin neurons, which makes us feel sluggish. Malfunctions in orexin neuron sensitivity and firing rate can lead to disorders such as narcolepsy.

So, when you eat a meal that doesn't raise your blood glucose, you don't feel as sluggish afterward. For this reason, I eat almost no carbohydrates in the morning to prevent the inevitable crash I used to experience mid morning. In the case of the higher carb meal, insulin spikes and your parasympathetic nervous system goes full tilt to get blood glucose under control. As someone pointed out earlier, the PNS is all about rest and digestion.

So, to answer your question, the response is "natural" but that doesn't mean it is a particularly good thing, especially if you have something important to do after that glucose spiking meal.

Eating activates the parasymapthetic nervous system which is associated with rest and digestion so feeling a bit drowsy after a meal isn't anything that major. If you feel like you could pass out after a meal though I don't think that's very good.

I react when I eat a whole sweet potato for some reason, too much insulin response and then I crash afterwards. Maybe it was just too much all together?? Do you usually eat that quantity of food at once?

A plate of sweet potato fries just sounds like a lot of carbs to me. That insulin response will put anyone to sleep depending on when their last workout was. I only eat like that after breaking a solid sweat.
