Hack my new hunger pangs

I've been Primal for 9 months and recently embarked upon my first Whole30. I'm currently on Day 5. The only changes I've made are to eliminate dairy, alcohol, and any sugar (which unfortunately also means things like bacon).

So why am I so damn hungry?

One of the best things about eating this way has been the complete freedom from hunger. Such a revelation for me, so I'm not appreciating its reappearance.

I haven't ramped up my exercise regimen.

Here are two days worth of menus, since I know you'll ask:

Breakfast: Eggs scrambled in avocado oil with ground pork, spices, basil, and tomatoes. Coffee with coconut cream and cinnamon. Snack: Handful of cashews. Lunch: Shrimp Salad w/Chive Mayo. Small bay shrimp, celery, radish, and red cabbage tossed with homemade chive mayo served on top of arugula and tat soi greens. Snack: 1/4 of a pear. Dinner: Ribeye steak with mustard greens saut??ed in almond oil with mushrooms, garlic, and ginger.

Breakfast: 2 eggs scrambled in avocado oil with chives. Coffee with coconut cream. Snack: Handful of almonds. Lunch: Arugula/tat soi salad with 3 chicken thighs saut??ed in almond oil, radishes, pumpkin seeds, and an olive oil dressing with tarragon vinegar. Snack: A few pieces of my daughter???s pear. Dinner: Curry Meatballs (with a little offal) in Creamy Tomato-Coconut Sauce from Mark???s Daily Apple. Served on riced cauliflower with olive oil. Soda water with lemon.

So in the absence of any other changes, why the sudden hunger?

Any ideas? Sugar withdrawal? Dairy withdrawal? Most of my meals feature plenty of fat, so I'm truly befuddled. Gracias in advance.

@Karen, you can use ghee so long as it's grass fed, according to the Whole30 web site.

Actually, I started having more bloating. And the feeling didn't seem related at all to fullness. It was full on hunger. But since going off the Whole30, I haven't had the same issues, even though my eating hasn't changed that much. Who knows? The human body is a mysterious thing. :)

is it possible you were experiencing some bloating before, thus feeling "fullness" more strongly, and now that you've eliminated the culprit you are feeling less "stuffed" due to less bloating?

Hi Rogue! We will get together one of these days, I promise! ;) I don't use olive oil for cooking (only for finishing or dressings), but have only recently started with avocado and almond and forgot to check on their safety for cooking. I have and use both lard and coconut oil, but if there's any chance of it overpowering (terrible in eggs!), I don't use it. For the purposes of the Whole30, I can't use dairy or bacon grease. Only 25 more days to go.

Have you thought about upping your fat intake? Your meals sound heavier on the protein than the fat - I know I usually find myself more satiated when I up the fat over the protein. 2 eggs is a lot of protein and not much fat for breakfast.

Things like extra coconut cream (or coconut cream yoghurt which I have recently made and is VERY filling), avocado by itself of mushed up with mayonnaise as a sauce/spread (yum), fattier cuts of meat... etc? Perhaps the missing fat was initially coming from the dairy which you cut out?

Hi Karen! Your meals look great...the only question/change I would make without further info is your fats. I see olive oil, avocado oil and almond oil used for cooking...I would only recommend using oils like that in small quantities unheated. I wonder if you switched to using butter, ghee, lard and coconut oil instead if that would end up being more satisfying for you?

Personally I have used IF to help me solve my cravings. At first it is hard because your body is used to a certain schedule (ghrelin plays a major role here).

I daily do 16/8 fasting/feeding. My meals are really large and end up needed only 2 to satisfy me. If need to snack than that usually indicated I did not eat enough fat or protein, and my meal should have been a bit bigger.

In general, up the fat and protein, eat slightly larger meals. As J. Stanton says "Eat Like A Predator, Not Like Prey"!

try dropping the caffeine in the coffee, i read that interferes with blood sugar levels that can control hunger. yes i remember now caffeine act like a hormone switch affecting stress hormone ACTH, blood pressure, and insulin resistance. i was a heavy coffee drinker but gave it up. Now, i dont even miss it. try a mug of hot coconut milk as a substitute.

I really think it is the loss of fat from dairy. Also try increasing your breakfast size by adding fat and protein. You may even get to the point where you dont need the first snack...

I was going to say maybe more fats, but I see other people have already said this. I was thinking because maybe you were getting a lot of fat from dairy, and when you took that out you also took out a bunch of satiating fats.

Also, if you're going through any kind of sugar withdrawal then that could possibly cause cravings. I know that happened to me. When I took out sugars I didn't just crave sugars, I started craving all kinds of food for awhile. But it died down as the sugars left my system. It helped to have more coconut milk and fats like that. So maybe you can try that? More fat?

Just drop the snacks and eat bigger meals! If you eat frequently like that, you condition your body to get hungry every couple of hours. Add ghee and coconut oil, eat three square meals, eat until you're actually full.

Hi,


Ive been reading the hunger pains while eliminating sugar. Im no doctor but its yeast "dying" being as though yeast lives off of sugar. Hunger pain is the reaction. So, not sure if that's true but It kinda make sense. My bloating is gone.
