hi everyone,

My questions pretty much says it all. Since going paleo about a month ago I am hungry all the time, have a lot of saliver in my mouth which is not pleasant, everything tastes like metal. I find I cannot use metal sppons or forks or my food tasts very bad. I am also very cold...

My diet: Suppl vit D, A, Zinc, selenium, C Breakfast: bacon & eggs in CO one day, fruit & nts + bacon the other day snack: nuts & raisins (I knnow not very good but like them and do not want to lose weight) lunch: salad with sardines/ salmon/ parmaham... Dinner: some variation of chicken/beef with veCOetables...usually fried in CO, sometimes sweet patato (once or twice a week) desert: banana or apple baked in CO with cinamon

I have paleo carrot cake or other baked goods once or twice a week

I have not lost weight and don't want to!

what is wrong?

I get a metallic taste in my mouth whenever my carbs are too low. I disagree with the carbs/insulin hypothesis in an otherwise healthy person. There is plenty of research to back that up.

I have heard that going to a primal/paleo type diet can make food sensitivities much more symptomatic. My partner, for example, used to eat a lot of processed pork products before going primal. He had a torta cubana (chicken/pork sandwich with hot dog and ham) the other night and the nitrates really set him off, gave him a really weird numb sensation in his mouth.

I share the expeirnce but I had the metallic taste, too. This was all because I was VLC. Just not enough carbs. I do 1.25-1.5 grams if carbohydrate per pound of body weight. I weigh about 172 so about 250-300grams per day keeps me proper

Have you taken LSD in the past? Even if you aren't losing weight, but experience more autophagy than you previously did, you could be freeing any remnants of it into your system, and those are all classic "coming down" symptoms.

Pine mouth is very real and very bad. It comes on a few days after eating the nuts and can last weeks. There's a good comment thread on it on a Nikoley post: http://freetheanimal.com/2011/01/lost-mojo-an-impinged-rotator-cuff-and-now-pine-mouth-what-else.html I'm glad to hear the nuts were taken off the market! I've been avoiding them like the plague...

Excitotoxins concentrate heavy metals from diet. Fillings are not that big an issue for most. My labs are clean and I have amalgams. Infect my entire family does. People with leaky guts and lowered immunity need to worry about that angle. It's not a pandemic

A friend of mine had similar symptoms after eating pine nuts that were poor in quality and not ment for people to eat (Pinus armandii og Pinus massoniana). The metal taste lasted for weeks. The pine nuts were taken off the market by the seller. The nuts were imported from China. This was reported in USA and Europe as well. It seems that these nuts are sometimes mixed with other nuts.

When I had a odd metallic taste in my mouth it urned out my one and only crown had become unsealed on one side resulting in the tooth to start decaying, food was getting in. I only noticed the taste, but probably it had been decaying for a while. Once they removed the crown it was more obvious, gross really, but they saved the tooth and a new crown. Taste completely gone.

At that time I also had all my old fillings removed as well just to be safe.

Don't know if that could be your issue but the mouth is definitely a good indicator that somethings going in.

The other thing that came to mind is too much canned tuna?

Honestly, this sounds like heavy metal poisoning (particularly mercury poisoning). Do you have fillings in your teeth? If so, you may need to see your dentist ASAP!

A previous thread about metallic taste in the mouth suggests it could be anything from an oral infection to a nightshade allergy. Might want to try an elimination diet and see a GP or dentist to check for problems.

I never had the issue with metallic taste, that is alarming. But I was also cold, hungry and drooling whilst eating low carb paleo. Starch solved the issue and contributed to a near-complete healing of my metabolism (took about a year of moderate-carb, high-fat whole foods eating).

Have you changed any lotions or soaps? I get a nasty metallic taste with some products - even some expesive face creams.

Although very improbable, metallic taste and extra salivation could point to a Spinal Fluid Leak.. any other symptoms? Headaches?
