Do Paleo guys grow better moustaches? And what purpose does facial hair serve?

Well, it is MOvember and all. Thought I should ask...

And from an evolutionary point of view, what purpose does facial hair serve?

... other than to catch the breadcrumbs.. which seems pointless... because cavemen didn't eat bread

EDIT: Some new science to back up the beard: http://worldobserveronline.com/2013/04/15/beards-keep-you-young-healthy-handsome-says-science-2/

Lmao thats a very far-fetched evolution theory!

My answer is that it let cavewomen, who are physically weaker than cavemen, grab their man by the beard and drag him around.

I don't think you understand how evolution works, but that's a story for another thread.

Oh really! Is that due to the hair directly, or a correlation you've discovered?

Cavemen were pretty hairy so I bet a paleo guy could grow some pretty sweet facial hair.

It seems to me that the purpose of hair on one's head is to retain body heat.

For instance, people of primarily European ancestry (colder climate) have straight hair which retains heat, often in layers, better than the hair of of those with primarily sub-Saharan African ancestry (warmer climate), which is very curly, stands off the head, and doesn't retain heat as well. So, it logically follows that male facial hair adds a degree of protection from the elements - they did range farther from "home" on hunts and such. Beards also break up the outline of the face creating sort of a natural camouflage when stalking prey, or hiding, while in the bush.

I suspect that at some point in human history both men and women had hair all over their bodies. Body hair is a sign of a mature person. Maybe women lost their facial hair via natural selection in that caveman tended toward more youthful looking mates thought better able to bear healthy children. At the same time, women might have chosen men with more facial hair because that was associated with maturity and experience and the guy with a big beard was assumed to be more capable of providing for her and her babies.

I'm speculating, of course, but I'd bet the reasons come down to sex and environment.

Alright, I'm only saying this 'cause it could totally fit in with all these other complex evolutionary theories, but uh, guys with facial hair give better oral sex. Ahem.

I have a perfectly symmetrical mustache the ends of which may twist upwards like an evil villain's. I don't know what that would be good for.

My beard is perpetually patchy but it did get a little better on Paleo. The hair on top of my head though is much better -- thicker, healthier, doesn't get dirty or greasy as often. I am 42 and the age when a lot of guys are losing their hair and mine is very thick.

There are cultural and anthropological reasons... Hairy male faces are (or were..) the most authoritative and were surely preceived as stronger and scarier by foes.
