Recently diagnosed HIV+, best course of treatment for someone trying to avoid ARVs?

Answered on December 11, 2014
Created March 05, 2013 at 11:33 PM

I want to avoid Antiretrovirals because the side effects are horrendous, even in 2013, and I'm pretty sure they give you GI disorders. I know at least 2 people who were diagnosed with IBS after ARV therapy. That doesn't mean the ARVs gave them IBS, but it's a pretty good indicator that they change intestinal functioning.

Why do Protease Inhibitors/Intergrase Inhibitors cause diarrhea? Nobody has been able to explain this to me.

I'm not a fan of pharmaceuticals, but there has to be something "gentler" than ARVs. What "holistic" treatments should I be doing?

No pity posts please. Nobody really dies from HIV nowadays unless you live in a 3rd world country.

Many of us remember how it was when people did not take these drugs. They died. I would take the anti virals if I were you in this case and I write that as someone who has hardly even had a headache pill for 10 years. I am not pro medicines unless you really need them but in this case I would in your situation (I have a reasonable amount of knowledge, from a family of doctors etc).

Among those diagnosed with HIV at age 25, the probability of surviving to age 50 without ARV treatment is less than 5%.

If you do look at Dr. Montagnier's work, read it critically. He was awarded the Nobel in 2008 for the discovery of HIV, but has been an extremely controversial figure.

"No pity posts please. Nobody really dies from HIV nowadays unless you live in a 3rd world country." Probably because the people in 3rd world countries don't have access to pharmaceuticals. I would take the medications prescribed and try to do whatever you can holistically to try to reduce the side-effects, but not replace the meds with a holistic approach. First of all, I have to say I'm sorry you're going through this.

Why do Protease Inhibitors/Intergrase Inhibitors cause diarrhea?

The mucosa of the intestine is where active virus production takes place. Diarrhea is a common effect of protease inhibitors (which are a part of ARV therapy) because it damages the barrier between the bowel wall and intestinal lumen. This leads to leakage of ions and water from the tissue into the lumen.

What "holistic" treatments should I be doing?

You could look into using herbs (as in Chinese medicine or Siddha medicine) and homeopathic medicine. I also found this interesting website for alternative HIV treatments.

And here's some more interesting reads on homeopathic medicine:
http://www.homeopathic.com/Documents/AIDSinJACM2003.pdf
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2637286/

Wishing you all the best.

D3 is a great immune system booster.

I have avoided colds and the flu (and kept my asthma symptoms at bay) for over 3 years by keeping my D3 blood level on the high end of normal.

Get your D3 level up to around 80-100 ng/ml. You can ask for the 25 (OH)D test to see where you are at.

More info at www.vitamindcouncil.org

Make sure you are supplementing Magnesium and getting sufficient A & K from your diet.

I have been lurking on this site for nearly a year now, and have found quite a bit of good advice and information. There are often some pretty silly and/or misinformed questions and answers, but all in all I felt that the site provided more good than bad info. However, WTF is going on with these answers? I would be incredibly concerned about DontFeelLikeDying, if I weren't quite certain that, like Lazza's friend, he will succumb to his doctors' once he his CD4 cell count drops or he develops symptomatic AIDS. We can only hope his AIDS defining event isn't one of the basically-a-death-sentence ones.

Lazza, your friend (and others who pursue nutritional routes) felt well for 14 years not because of his efforts but because he was in the asymptomatic phase:

"After primary HIV infection, a chronic asymptomatic phase ensues of variable duration, with symptomatic disease usually developing when CD4 cell count falls to lower than 350 cells/mmc and being characterized by the occurrence of several AIDS- or non AIDS-associated events (mainly infections or tumors). In the absence of treatment, death is quite unavoidable. "(A brief history of antiretroviral therapy of HIV infection: success and challenges)

Yes, there are also those people who seem to hold off AIDS-progression indefinitely. Is it because they take massive doses of vitamin D? NO. There existence is well known and a hot topic of research:

"However a minority of patients exist, the so-called ?????lite controllers???, who are able to spontaneously control the infection and maintain low viremia and high CD4 cell count in the absence of therapy." (A brief history of antiretroviral therapy of HIV infection: success and challenges)

The side effects you are so worried about--do they really trump death? Lymphocytic leukemia? Multiple myeloma? Kaposi's sarcoma? Get off the message boards and go talk to a doctor, my friend. Preferably someone who was alive during the AIDS crisis and knows exactly the devastation untreated HIV wreaks upon the human body. And by untreated I mean not treated with ARVs. Take 5 minutes on google scholar and all of you will find literally thousands of clinical trials and epidemiological studies very soundly establishing that HAART is the only reason that HIV is now considered a chronic illness, rather than a death sentence. Here is just one example, a study investigating the country-level effect of introducing HAART to India:

"We investigated the impact of HAART on the incidence of all major AIDS-associated infections and tuberculosis, the most common opportunistic infection in India [5, 6]. India has the highest burden of tuberculosis in the world, accounting for one-third of the world???s cases of tuberculosis and 2 million new cases per year [7]. We have continued to observe an in- crease in the incidence of tuberculosis and all other opportun- istic infections among patients who did not have access to HAART, but as was observed in South Africa [8] and the United States [9], we observed a concurrent decrease in the incidence of tuberculosis among patients receiving HAART. Patients who received antiretroviral therapy also experienced longer dura- tions of survival. The death rate was inversely proportional to the use of antiretroviral therapy, decreasing the most after the introduction of generic antiretrovirals into the country in the year 2000 [10]. Although the incidence of opportunistic infections and death decreased, patients experienced adverse effects resulting from use of antiretroviral therapy. Rash and nausea were the most common adverse effects" The Changing Natural History of HIV Disease: Before and After the Introduction of Generic Antiretroviral Therapy in Southern India

Long story short? HIV infection is STILL a death sentence without proper treatment. The sooner you realize this the longer your life is likely to be, and the higher quality, as well. There are many, serious adverse events associated with current HIV treatments. However, uncontrolled HIV infection itself is much, much worse. OP, you have to accept your situation. This is a situation where the pharma industry and your medical-school-educated, HIV-speicalist doctors know BEST. To anyone's knowledge, there is NOTHING in the natural world that can control your infection if you are not an elite responder. You can have a good life, but you have to let go of your pride and allow your doctors to help you. You can take good care of yourself, eat well, relax, etc., and this will be helpful but it just can't replace ARV treatment. The sooner you accept this and comply with treatment the more likely you will be to survive, have grandkids, and die at a ripe old age.

Everyone else, (other than Matt and syranna): SHAME ON YOU. Seriously, you should be ashamed. You were encouraging non-compliance with a life-saving treatment in a condition that WILL kill the OP if left untreated. I wish I could revoke all of your "giving advice on the internet" cards. And how do you think this reflects on Paleohacks to visitors who come by for some dietary advice? Makes us all look like a bunch of tin-foil-hat-wearing anti-pharma whackjobs. And also shame on everyone who knew they should speak up but didn't.

I suggest you research iodine supplementation. Iodine is antimicrobial and is one of those essential nutrients most people are deficient in. Many folks go with heavy dosing w/o issue (excess iodine is flushed from the body within 24 hours). There is a forum on iodine on curezone.com. But remember you will need to take companion supplements (magnesium, selenium, ..) in order for your body to correctly absorb iodine and remove waste (bromine mostly). Having said all this, I don't know if there is are any studies or even anecdotal info on folks successfully treating HIV with iodine.

Although I fully appreciate your desire to avoid ARVs I do hope you get the appropriate blood tests regularly to ensure nothing horrible sneaks up on you. I have a friend who avoided any HIV meds for 14 years, hoping that eating healthily would be sufficient. It was only after losing considerable weight did he finally get blood work done. His numbers were horrible, and he was placed on ARVs. It took a year for him to stabilize.

Let us know where your research leads. Surely there are others on this forum in your situation.

You might want to give elderberry a try, it's a known antiviral. It's known for working against the flu virus. It might or might not help.

There are a few sites that claim it would work against HIV as well: http://hivskeptic.wordpress.com/tag/elderberry/

You might want to look into cancer bush (Sutherlandia frutescens) - I don't know enough about it in relation to HIV to comment further, I'm afraid, but it was rec'd to me for treatment of cancer and I know it has been connected to various diseases and also supposed to help with appetite and weight gain...
