Staple foods for high carb paleo

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created August 01, 2013 at 2:02 PM

I am transitioning to high carb to support my training... Any foods high in carbs, low on glycemic index and high in micronutrients to base my diet around.

P.S I don't have any intolerances

If you were to read that article that I posted about Rich Froning you would see that it starts out by saying that Rich does not follow the Paleo Diet as so many of the other Cross Fitters do. Is Rich the only ELITE cross fitter out there?

dude you are trying to bend this article into something it is not lol "I eat a lot of peanut butter and drink a lot of whole milk" rich froning. Can you explain to me why pretty much every elite athlete eats everything that paleo followers do, plus things they banish? Why do wrestlers smash gatorade, why do strongmen and powerlifters like andy bolton drink gallons of milk, why do bodybuilders eat a shit tonne of carbs, why do sprinters eat buckets load of sugar. Because they follow science and the very basic fact that to get to an elite level you need more than meat, veg and fruit etc

http://dyogifitnessandperformance.com/2012/07/21/the-froning-diet-not-so-paleo-but-works-for-him/ Here is your Rich Froning Diet... Even the writer of the article makes reference to how bad it is but that it soemhow works for him... Probably cause of his age and routine. The writer then goes on to state how bad it is and why. Certainly not something i would want to advise someone to do... Rich Froning tells his team to, "eat clean meats and veggies" but does not "listen to myself" when it comes to his diet. Nowhere does he state that you can not eat Paleo and be an Elite Athlete...

LOL, Im sorry I never saw your Paleo Advice... Still dont see it. You see, Im not the one calling you or anyone else names; name calling is typically done by a person who is not able to offer an intelligent response. I'm not even arguing your response all I am saying is this is a PALEO BLOG. To tell someone to eat Bread and Peanut Butter is not giving good Paleo advice which is why I am sure he posted his question on this blog in the first place. It may be fine for another blog, thats all Im saying. I've read many of your responses on this blog and I again ask, why are you so angry!?!?

Also why do you want a blog with 100% conformation bias, scared of debate much? Considering you keep calling me angry. I am typing rational responses while you are capslocking like a rustled jimmies madman. Why are you so jimmy rustled?

Like i said, why are you so angry... This is a PALEO BLOG, people obviously other than you, come here for PALEO ADVICE. If he wanted non-paleo advice for his diet there are millions of blogs to support that. We are not Paleo Nazi's as you put it. We are merely giving PALEO ADVICE on a PALEO BLOG. If you can not contribute in that fashion then why are you here and not on some other BLOG. I'm pretty sure there are hundreds of ELITE ATHLETE blogs that would satisfy you far more than this blog can.

Because I don't want you to give this guy bad advice when it comes to him eating like an athlete needs to. He is not a fatty trying to lose fat, he needs to constantly be getting faster stronger and making sure he recovers. Why do non of the crossfit champs or top 5 eat strict paleo when that sport and this diet are synonymous? Your dietary Nazism is not what the athletes need to be the best.

Well I mean paleo is great but if someone is eating 6000 calories a day it isn't very economical. I don't think fat from milk or peanut butter in unhealthy nor do I think consuming whole grains is going to make you fat or unhealthy so I recommend them if someone has more of an open mind when it comes to whole foods v paleo. Obviously fruit is better micronutrient wise. Whole milk is brilliant though and for any aspiring athlete I would recommend it. I've seen guys asked if they are on something after 3 months of including large amounts of milk to their diet and goup few weight clas

So what you are suggesting is that if he wants very high carb without being paleo eat what you suggest, but if he wants high carb and paleo stick to fruit and tubers.

Banana 500-700g a day Frozen berries 200g a day Orange juice 500ml a day

If you are burning over 3000 calories a day from exercise on top of your bmr and need like 6000 kcal to maintain weight here are my suggestions

Morning: three rounds of brown bread 3 tbsp peanut or almond butter 1 litre full fat milk

Lunch 500g banana 2 scoops whey 1tbsp peanut butter Milk or water 500ml

Mid lunch

Tuna and mayo sub on whole wheat roll Gatorade or litre carbogain

Post Exercise: carb drink 100g sugar Protein shake

2 hours after exercise:

As much fruit as you can eat, full fat milk Whole grain bread or pasta with a protein source, I like chicken and peppers and make sure to costume high carb protein and fat.

Before bed meal: 3 scoops of whey or 1l milk

If you are just on a normal routine and want to keep strict paleo stick to fruit and tubers for carbs.

What has been working for me:

Potatos, sweet potatos, and rice at meals. Fruit in between meals. Coconut water and dates are also good.

Obvious answers but that is because they are tried and true.

I disagree with the peanut butter, it contains the carcinogen aflatoxin and the whole grain bread as we all know is not a good suggestion either, considering you are coming to a Paleo Diet website. Trust me when I say you do not need Bread and Peanut butter to gain weight... the good weight you are looking to gain. Milk is another one of those foods that I would not consume as much as G.U. states, it is not natural for humans to consume cows milk so it should be held to minimum and if consumed it should be full fat or straight heavy cream.

I would eat fattier cuts of meat, high fat nuts like macadamias, and plenty of starchy tubers like sweet potatoes. Dont over do it on the fruits however, unless they are melons and berries. Try watermelon after your workouts, it is low in sugar and really help to replenish the body as does Coconut Water. Definitely include Coconut Milk and Coconut Cream in your diet, great substitues for cows milk products and and will provide enough carbs and nutrients to support your workouts...

These are just suggestions!

Potatoes, sweet potatoes, bananas, blueberres, blackberries, strawberries, apples, and butternut squash. I personally would leave the rice out of it, you'll get way more benefit with potatoes and sweet potatoes.
