Bananas giving me heartburn

Answered on August 19, 2014

I started doing paleo after having severe gastrointestinal problems, and have been doing well with it for quite a while. I will usually switch between a few different diets, mostly just a modified paleo friendly vegetarian diet (homemade almond milk, avocados, broccoli, zucchini), to a fairly strict paleo diet, to fasting (water only).

This last switch to strict paleo diet, I noticed I have been getting heartburn and the culprit is/are bananas. Does anyone have any idea why or have any remedies? I have tried things like different vinegars and also doing stomach exercises but I still keep getting heartburn whenever I eat bananas.

When my problems first started getting really bad, 6 months ago, I went to a Gastro specialist and had that tested along with a myriad other things. After a few blood tests, stool/urine samples, an endoscopy and a colonoscopy they were still unable to tell me what my problem was, so thats when I started changing my diet again and have been sticking with fairly strict Paleo ever since!

I do take aloe vera daily and hasn't seemed to help, but I mix Milk Thistle with it so maybe I will try separating those.

Awesome thanks Renee. Ginger usually helps with other stomach problems so I will go get some fresh now. Also I enjoy the taste of licorice so that won't hurt either!

I for a long time experienced what I thought was heartburn from bananas as well as some other foods (canned tuna, raw fish, beer, wine, kombucha, melon etc.) but started to realize it may be eosinophilic esophagitis. It's not quite the same as heartburn, just a quick tightening and acidic feeling in the esophagus due to an allergic like reaction from eosinophils in the esophagus. Maybe something to think about on your end.

I had heartburn the other night so I was googling home remedies. Interestingly, bananas often come up as both a cause and a cure for heartburn. Since you seem to be experiencing the former....I'd stay stop eating bananas.

Ginger, licorice, baking soda, and apple cider vinger with honey were some of the remedies I read about.

Yup I had a bout of heartburn recently and it tied in with eating a lot of bananas.

That's interesting - they do the same thing to my mum.

As Renee said ginger and baking soda can be quite effective. My mum also takes aloe vera which seems to soothe her throat.
