Hormonal Stomach Upsets

I have been primal/paleo for the last four months and followed a Weston Price style diet before that. Lots of fermented food, pastured meats, organ meats, raw dairy, fermented dairy and no grains, I am allergic. I had IBS from the grain allergy but have not felt anything from it in over 8 years. On the Weston Price diet I was still having hormonal issues and candida issues so I decided to get as back to basics as one can get.

My first month of going primal seemed fine and I know my messed up hormones are adjusting because I am getting less menstural pain, I am ovulating for the first time, no crazy pms cravings and so forth. I am still eating dairy since it never gave me any issue, eating raw fermented vegetables, drinking kefir, eating yogurt, limiting my fruit intake and carbohydrate intake.

Within the last three months, though, I have been dreading my cycles because, before I menstruate, during or after or sometimes all throughout I started getting all sorts of weird stomach problems. Nausea, IBS like flare ups with pain, diarrhea, shivers, heartburn, gas pains and just a general sense of unease all accompanied by anxiety.

This past cycle as soon as I finished I noticed that every time I fasted a bit during the day the next day I would be nauseous sometimes with diarrhea, headache and stomach pains.

Also I was sick for the first ten years after I was born off and on with projectile vomiting , heavily dosed on antibiotics and today I still do not know what I was sick with or what lasting effects it may have left, but I am at my wits end I feel as if I am doing everything right and I just keep falling. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated.

I weigh 105 lbs (underweight at 5'5") and I simply can't fast. I also have experimented a lot with my carb intake in and find I feel by far the best, in many ways, with at least 100g daily. Lean/thin people often benefit from carbs IMO.

Thank you so much! I will definitely try the coconut, plenty available. Just the meat or the water and everything? I was considering the issue of to low carbs recently. My daily intake is anywhere from 25-87grams with me at 95lbs. I know if I dare intermittent fast the next day my stomach gets terribly sick.

I had below normal levels of progesterone for most of the month and almost no testosterone. My doc put me on hormone creams, which took about 27 days to cause the worst stomach problems I have had in years. (and I had really bad tummy troubles already) Turns out, despite both the pharm & my doc knowing I am allergic to soy -the testosterone is a soy extract and both creams were made of soy lotion. My doc wants me on pills now but Instead, I am going to focus on fixing other health problems and hope the hormones right themselves.

What were your results? I've never heard of these tests/studies and am interested to hear more.

I too have had a similar problem (which seems to have resided now *crosses fingers*) and would definitely agree with the recommendation to up the carbs during this portion of the cycle. I've also found recently that eating raw coconut has helped tremendously with any sort of cramping and pms symptoms.

When I changed from Weston Price to Paleo, I eliminated potatoes, stopped eating even maple syrup and rapdura, started eating less dairy, increased my protein intake and stopped eating so much fruit. Occasionally I would eat popcorn or sprouted corn tortillas before Paleo, the one grain I did not react to badly to, but now I don't even cheat on that. I also increased my exercise and adjusted to more natural movement exercises.

Can you explain exactly what you changed when you went from Weston Price to Primal/Paleo?

I tried eliminating dairy with same results except I start to crave fat like crazy at that point. I am going to look into the month long saliva test, I forgot to mention I do have cyst, can they cause all of that out of the blue? Not to sure what a hormonal study is either.

Have you ever tried going off the dairy?

Sounds to me like a problem with LC paleo. I had something similar, most severe in the first couple periods after I went VLC. I also had IBS caused by grains, asymptomatic now on a 'primal' diet. And my body loves fatty dairy.

I would try eating the starches most people deal with the best and see if that resolves the issues. Sweet potatoes, potatoes, white rice.

I agree with Sara. Sounds like a problem with dairy. Have you ever tried eliminating it?

You could see a doctor and have a hormonal study done, along with a girl physical (to rule out cysts, etc). I just finished a month long saliva hormone test. The results were very enlightening.
