Premature grey and nutrition?

Answered on August 19, 2014

I'm 30. My brother is 27. We're both going grey WAY early.

Are they any nutritional links to grey hair?

I've noticed this "reversal" as well.

Yah, last I saw, they used lead to do the coloring. Not exactly natural or something I really want to mess with.

I thought that it was a genetic thing- some of my friends went grey early but it ran in their family.

Add some black streaks and I think that's kinda hot.

I started with black brown hair and started seeing gray strands in my 20s. I was salt and pepper in my early 40s and now, in my mid-60s I am pretty silver.

After 7 months of ancestral eating, I am noticing darker strands as well as lot of new little short dark ones coming in. I'm heading back to salt and pepper.

In my case, I think I was deficient in protein before as my nails are much harder too. I don't know what else was going on, but I particularly noticed the hair improvement right around the same time that I realized I was finally burning stored fat without struggling.

Unfortunately I don't have my computer with me to look up the original resources, but from what I've read there are several mechanisms for overall aging that should be applicable to graying hair as well.

-ROS (reactive oxygen species) doing oxidative damage to the cells. Industrial seed ('vegetable') oils can add to this...like others have said- oxidation is a big enemy here.

-Glycation of proteins by blood glucose (particularly in a state of constantly elevated blood sugar)... so avoiding foods that stimulate Blood Sugar spikes is probably a good idea...

-There is an argument thatpast a certain threshold, protein over-consumption can lead to accelerated aging due to the activation of the mtor pathway and upregulated cellular proliferation and thus aging. The idea is that the body sees that we have a surplus of nutrients and sees this as a good time to grow and reproduce, shunting its own replace and repair mechanisms to the wayside. For a way that people have tried to manipulate this mechanism to their own advantage look up CRON (Calorie Restriction with Optimal Nutrition) This is also mentioned in both Nora Gedgaudas Primal Body, Primal Mind and Jaminet's Perfect Health Diet. Not sure how I feel about this, since I love my protein!

-Overconsumption of carbohydrates- Seems to activate a similar pathway to mtor and has the added issues of potential blood glucose disregulation.

Nutritional Fixes? Most likely avoidance of things that create ROS and glycation (which you are probably already doing on Paleo) and an inclusion of various foods and or supplements that are supposed to act as anti-oxidants...(for specifics just google it) I've heard good claims for trans-Resveratrol and PQQ, and you may want to look into making sure you maximize the precursors of the powerful anti-oxidant glutathione in your diet (it doesn't work as pill- damaged in digestive system before absorbed)

Wish I had more specifics for you, but hopefully this helps point you in a helpful direction... Good Luck!

Interesting question. I've always assumed that there was probably some link that we haven't quite figured out yet.

There is this study:

"There is circumstantial evidence that oxidative stress may be a pivotal mechanism contributing to hair graying and hair loss"

I'll be interested to see the answers here.

It's not the most paleo thing in the world but I have often heard that molasses will reverse graying hair. Molasses has a lot of vitamins and minerals in it, so probably one of those.

my father was grey in his 40's but the colour returned after having mitral valve replacement surgery in his 50's. my guess is the improved blood circulation reversed the greying.

They also have confirmed that smoking cigs leads to premature graying.

Only things I've seen talked about are growth hormone, and the stuff I saw was anectdotal. Not sure how well it works for premature greyness. My thought, find a way to naturally and consistently prevent hair from turning grey/hair loss and you will be a zillionaire.
