best proteins for humans are...WORMS!

For sure a lot lot lot of years ago, in one of the cold winters, If a paleoman had found a worm, he would have definitely eat it! But today, not anymore! But why? maggots and worms are A GREAT sources of proteins, are a lot easily to raise then meat! ( don't misunderstand me, I LOVE MEAT ) and I love paleohistory too. It sad seiing how today with pizza, hamburgers, pasta and other shits men are auto killing themselves. We should start eating REAl food, of course meat, fish and veggies, but also insects that 5.0000 years ago would have make a paleoman happy and full!

do you agree?

Ants don't taste bad at all. The formic acid is nice.

A crab is just a spider under water. But somehow I don't think I'd like spider as much as crab.

I've only had sea snails, and wasn't a fan. I'll have to give the earthy ones a try. I saw a special on snail caviar with Andrew Zimmern that definitely left me curious. http://www.thesqueeze.net/All-Categories/Food-Wine/Gourmet/Snail-Caviar-The-next-big-thing

I have a friend who claims that while she was sailing around the world, she caught, batter-dipped, and deep-fried giant tropical cockroaches. She didn't eat them herself, but served them to an obnoxious customs inspector who was visiting her boat. He ate them.

Also, if you have meat that's gone bad you can leave it outside and turn it into maggots (which can also turn lean protein into fat). See "Unlean, Rewild" by Miles Olsen and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXWbBC1kQ24 (turn rotten meat into maggots into chicken eggs).

Well if you are what you eat and ants are 10 times stronger, than maybe, just maybe you can be as strong as a chimp. Or maybe if we consume termites which have the enzyme in their system necessary to digest cellulose than maybe we can metabolize grasses and leaves better. I"m all for it and apparently tarantulas taste like crab when cooked.

yes, I agree: http://paleohacks.com/questions/175811/eating-earthworms-and-other-insects#axzz2LZINwcri

It would be a great way to cultivate sustainable agriculture.

I'm all for being open-minded about food these days myself, but I draw the line at cockroaches.

It's a matter of economic efficiency, I'd guess. First, with cows, you can harvest large slabs of meat quickly. Try sifting out worms from the topsoil in your backyard.

Second, food safety. Large slabs of meat are easy to clean. If the cow is healthy, then the meat merely needs to be processed in a sanitary way in order to be edible.

Most people have the ewwww factor when it comes to "squishy" raw proteins, like the insides of bugs. But somehow we've become OK with eating the following meats, when cooked, even though raw they have a serious snot-like viscosity:

  • lobster
  • crab (ever had softshell crab raw? - it's a Thai thing and really hard to warm up to)
  • egg whites
  • some fish

So yeah, I think the cultural mindblocks need to come down and we're all set for buggy delights.

I've eaten worms, they don't taste nearly as good as a hamburger. My guess is that, in a blind taste test, hamburger will defeat worm any day of the week.

I did see some frozen escargot at the store the other day, so there is some market for this kind of thing. But overall, I'd save the worms for when there is no hamburger available.
