Question is simple... Hopefully. No one likes to waste money so the simple question is how do I know if I need it. A test of some sort?

Your best bet is to get a stool test done. I did one with my naturopath and it was well worth doing. I discovered that there were two strains of bacteria that were completely non-existant within my gut. Taking probiotics actually made my problem worse due to suspected SIBO, which was uncovered by the stool test. So it really helped us get to the bottom of things and work out the best treatment for my body.
As a side note, a cheaper and often more effective way to get probiotics into your system is do make your own fermented vegetables. It's a great way to use up excess produce and it's incredibly tasty. Have a look at Body Ecology for more information on why it works and how to make them.
