Irritated gums, from Walnuts (maybe?)

I noticed that whenever i eat walnuts for a couple a days i get irritated (itchy, bleeding) gums. It's the second time I'm noticing this...

Anybody ever had a similar reaction or is it just pure coincidence?

It's the tannic acid. I get the same reaction. Soak them for 4 hours, discard the water, soak again and discard the water again = perfectly fine.

It is possible that it is from walnuts, as they have a large amount of pro-inflammatory O6 fats:

I've seen quite a range of variation in responses to walnuts from people who eat them; sometimes they are neutral, other times clear signs of inflammation appear.

There is quite a lot of variation in how traits are expressed in any population:

I had sore gums the entire first two motnhs I was on the paleo diet. I couldn't figure it out, because some days it seemed worse than others. I finally made a dentist appointment and told him about my change in diet. He asked if I had been eating a lot of zucchini, because he has several patient's with an allergy to zucchini that manifests as sore/irritated/bleeding gums. Mine would get so bad sometimes that my teeth would feel loose.

Apparently it is called oral allergy syndrome.

They don't bother me, but my sister's mouth gets really sore whenever she eats walnuts. She finally figured out that she is allergic to them.

You're kidding me. I, too, have had swollen, painful gums for the past couple weeks! I blamed it on when I burned my mouth a couple weeks ago, but that sounds like a bit of a stretch at this point. I've been very generous with nut consumption (mostly almonds and cashews, and the occasional Brazil nut, hazelnut and pecan, but no walnuts) as of late as part of a transition to lower carbohydrates/higher fat.

I'm going to reduce my nuts and see if it helps. Thanks for asking this question, Flavio. I didn't even think to make that connection to my diet. :)

i had similiar reaction. Espaccially whenn eating much. So i stoped eating walnuts. I used to by the cheap californian walnuts. I stop eating them.

The last time i eat walnuts i eat good quality, so i more taste all tastes of the nut. The cravings go away. i had no bleeding.
