Budget Problem

Answered on November 06, 2013

Im starting out paleo, honestly im on a strict budget so I purchase meats from sam's and the regular grocery. Will that hinder my weight loss progress? I lift weights 2 times a week and do other physical activities 2 other days of the week. so 4 hours a week, is that enough?

That is do-able. You've got all of November, December and January! It's a relatively high amount to lose in three months, but it's feasible

I know what it's like. I'm in my twenties and most of my friends skip breakfast, buy crazy sweetened drinks at Starbucks, eat ramen noodles for lunch and go out for Thai or gourmet pizza and drinks regularly. You just have to focus on your own stuff and find ways to engage with others without falling off the bandwagon and sacrificing your own goals

you didnt :) I know that because my endurance will increase, and the scale doesn't move. I have a goal of 28lbs by my 28th bday (feb 6) I would really like to obtain the goal. I just get scared sometimes, because no one else around me really cares about their health.

being a female isn't the problem :) Me too

Weight loss is just more difficult for us, primarily because our lady hormones mess up a lot of other hormones in our bodies. The differences in the female body make weight loss less of a "eat less move more" situation and more of a "find the exact right thing that works for you, stick with it and don't get discouraged when your boyfriend loses weight twice as fast". If you're just starting out, and aren't already very lean, you probably won't have that much of a struggle. Hope I didn't scare you

I concur on the farmed salmon; I forgot about that. But I do wait for the sales, and then I stock up, vacuum-pack the fish and throw it in the chest freezer. I realize that's not practical for a student on a budget, but perhaps you could use social media or even Craigslist to develop relationships in your community with other Paleo people to share resources.

Just thought I'd add that you should just not buy items where organic/wild-caught is really the only healthy options. A few examples off the top of my head: don't buy:

farmed salmon

non-organic berries, grapes, tomatoes, apples, stonefruit, greens

If you eat conventional meat, choose leaner cuts and supplement with good fats. Grass fed butter is not too hard on the pocketbook and goes a long way-check Costco for Kerrygold butter and coconut oil in bulk. Canned fish bought on sale is a good source of Omega 3fat. And pastured eggs if you can.

@kiearea28,

I didn't mean to alarm you, just to mention a possibility. If you do a search on this site with the keywords "paleo female hormones", you can get a sense of the hormonal issues women uncover and resolve when they adopt a paleo diet.

@kiearea28,

This sounds radical, but I suggest you (and everyone) do not set weight loss goals, especially time-bound goals, because you can't control what your body does when you change your diet. You control only what you eat. As cl101 pointed out, the female body is a symphony of hormones, while the male body is a simple melody by comparison, and the hormonal environment is the most important factor in weight loss. If your hormonal environment has been badly out of whack, or even if you're just more sensitive to the hormonal balance than other women, you may need to be more patient or do additional work to establish the optimal hormonal environment than other people.

Organic/grass-fed/pastured is more related to health than weight loss. In general, especially if you're a male, weight loss is primarily about energy/nutrient balance, meaning getting the right amount of overall calories, fat, protein and carbs for YOUR body. That will change dependent on your age, current size, activity level, sex, etc. I think one can adopt a Paleo diet for weight loss on as little as $25-30 a week, though I'd say that's probably quite low for a really holistic, "health"-focused plan

I'm on a strict budget, too, so I don't buy organic or grass-fed anything, except bones for my broth. That hasn't affected my weight loss.
