My husband and I raise grass fed beef on our farm in Agassiz. We have one hanging at the butcher right now and taking orders for halves or quarter beef. Has been fantastic beef so far this season. Angus.

I was excited to post, but I'm from the Island and now realize I know almost nothing about Vancouver except for excellent all-food-all-weekend adventures when I visit my bro. Glad everyone is on the ball!

I live here too. Honestly I don't worry much about meat being grain-finished, so I've never asked about it. Good info for others though.

I live in Vancouver and have shopped at many of the places listed above. When I asked at Caper's/Whole foods about the grass-fed nature of their meat they said it was all grain finished. Same with Greens Market. I don't think there is much in the stores that is 100% grass fed. If we keep asking though, maybe that will change!

As you can see, Vancouver is a pretty awesome place to eat paleo :) despite all the macrobiotic/vegan stuff that seems to be all over Kits.

  • My first suggestion would be The Butcher, up near UBC (on W 10 a little bit down from the Safeway) I'm pretty sure they have grass-fed meat.

  • Jackson's Meat and Deli (on W 4 2200 block, and I think there's also a Granville Island location)

  • There are actually a couple of butcher shops on W 4 near Jackson's, I'd check all of those out.

  • The obvious, Whole Foods or Choices market.

  • Greens Organic Market at Broadway and Maple has grass-fed meat, I think, though I don't actually shop there so I'm not certain.

  • Stongs (around W 30th and Dunbar) has a good meat department for a grocery store and it's much cheaper than Whole Foods.

Seconding the suggestion to go ask at the butcher shops on Granville Island

There's also this place opening up on West Broadway soon.

There is a link above to Sumas Mountain Farms. I can't vouch for their meat but their eggs are amazing!!

The pasture raised poultry from K and M farms is good: http://www.pastureraisedpoultry.ca/

I visited North Valley Farms when I picked up some ground beef and soup bones. I was impressed with what I saw. http://www.northvalleyfarm.ca/

I picked up some meat from the freezers of the Ethical Kitchen restaurant in North Vancouver. Their family farm is called Pasture to Plate. http://ethicalkitchen.ca/ The service left something to be desired but the meat was tasty.

I don't remember the name of the farm but at the Kitsilano farmer's market there is a seller with grass fed meat. They have some offal too.

I want to get a quarter or half cow at some point but I haven't had the time to really do the research and planning.

You should also check out Famous Foods, at Famous Foods, 101-1595 Kingsway. They have the wild game, as well as hormone and antibiotic Angus beef.

I would suggest looking at a great new Vancouver start up company, meatme.co

They source ethically treated 100% grass fed meat.  Once you buy a share and the animal is 100% funded they deliver you meat to your home or office.

Great concept and great meat!

We also drive out from Vancouver to get our beef from Kine Meats in Richmond. Their prices can't be beat! Everything is 100% grass fed and finished and they have no minimum order sizes so you can order as little as one pound of ground beef if you wanted.

Saw this thread and thought it would be a good idea to share our website and store. Essentially we travel around the Lower Mainland pitching our farmers market tent and bring out a variety of organic, grass fed goodies that are locally sourced from in and around Chilliwack. We have grass fed and finished beef, lamb and bison as well as an excellent selection of gluten free organic sausages. Our schedule is Kitsilano on Mondays 2-6.30pm, Tuesday New Westminster 2-6pm, Wednesday East Vancouver 2-6pm, Thursday in North Vancouver 2-6pm, and Friday in Abottsford and Langley (drop off only).

www.homeontherangefarms.com is our website and we'd love to have you come and get your weekly grocery needs through our business. As long as you place an order by 6pm the day before you come, you can simply arrive and collect your order!

You can buy great grass fed local beef from us, Tams Farm. We have a small farm in Chilliwack, and we raise a limited number of beef per year. We have very loyal, long time customers, but this year we have an opening to supply a few more. We sell by the side or quarter, our prices are only slightly higher than what you pay for feed lot beef at a good butcher. Please email [email protected] if you are interested. The beef will be ready when the grass stops growing in October or November.

Yeah FAMOUS FOODS on Kingsway, they have New Zealand beef there - and guess what? New Zealand is a place where cows can graze on grass near year round so it officially fits the profile.

One can't be surprised that local meats here are grain finished, as our climate does not allow for year round grass grazing of animals. Same goes for butter, one must search well to find a true grass fed.

Take a look out in the summer for GRASS FED CHICKEN, there's one super great guy at the main st. farmer's market who sells it and the eggs are out of this world. Read up on grass fed eggs if you haven't already ;)

You can check out http://www.sumasmountainfarms.ca/index.php they are located in Abbotsford BC and in their website there is a tool to ask other shoppers to share a ride with them.

I get my grass fed beef from steveston farms. They offer gas fed/ grass finished and grass fed / grain finished, so ask for the exclusively grass fed. I can vouch for the quality of their beef and have bought from them for 2 years. Link : http://www.stevesfarm.com/steveston/

Well, I get my grass fed beef from La Cense Beef. I'm sure you'll like it. Their prices are the best around and everything is always fresh.

I don't live there but I found this online-- http://www.sumasmountainfarms.ca/ .

And also this one -- http://www.bigbearranch.com/ .

and this one--- http://www.grassonlybeef.ca/html/how_to_order.html say they deliver.

The simplest way to buy grass-fed beef is to buy either a quarter or a side and freeze it. That way you can get it packaged in sizes that suit you and your family and save multiple trips tracking it down.

I'd start by asking at the butcher shops on Granville Island.
