Does Grapefruit mess with your ability to remove toxins via your liver?

Bulletpoof Exec had this article that made me think that a grapefruit a day is not a good idea. Naringin is the active ingredient in question. http://www.bulletproofexec.com/sorry-4-hour-body-fanboys-grapefruit-is-not-bulletproof/

Any thoughts?

Yes. In high school, I used to drink grapefruit juice and then take drugs to get twice as high as I could normally.

It is well known that grapefruit juice inhibits an enzyme in the cytochrome p450 system leading to the build-up of certain drug metabolites to toxic levels. Of these, the interaction with cholesterol lowering agents has been most publicized. You can find a partial list of drug interactions here.

I think most people here shun conventional drug therapy, so if you are not taking any of these meds there should be no problem eating grapefruit or drinking its juice. Of course, some people here do take certain drugs that are on this list and should definitely stay away from grapefruit.

BTW, there are other foods that may interfere with drug adsorption, bioavailability, and metabolism. As always, Google is your friend.

Everything in moderation. Slowing down the liver metabolism occasionally might not be a bad thing but everyday - probably.

I think you have to consider the information in the article, it might not be a good thing to eat grapefruit everyday. According to the article though, if you are a young male (under 40), I don't think it's going to be a problem for you to have it 2-3 times a week.
