Gluten absorption through skin

Answered on August 19, 2014

I started using a shampoo with germinated wheat extract, for hair loss prevention. Just in case gluten is present in the shampoo, could it end up being absorbed by the skin?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but i just want to make sure i'm not doing any harm.

Hi, do you know about any studies on this? I.e. that gluten must be ingested for it to create a response?

"most" Dirt isn't poisonous , and while I might contact oil if I changed my cars oil, I would consider that poison...

No? You don't dig in the dirt, change your car's oil, clean paint brushes?

I usually am careful enough to not let it slide down my face. But it's good to know it only causes an immune response if swallowed. Thanks!

Gluten must be ingested in order to create an immune response in the gut. But the next question is - while shampooing your hair, do you sometimes let soap drip down your face and onto your lips? That can be enough to cause a reacton if you swallow any.

For that reason, I personally avoid products that contain gluten.

Some celiacs have a related condition, a symmetrical and very itchy rash, called Dermatitis Herpetiformis. They strictly avoid topical gluten.

What other potentially damaging chemicals are in that shampoo?

Ingested creates the gut irritation, but do you know that there isn't protein binding happening on your skin? I consider wheat poison, I don't put ingested poisons on my skin...
