Earwax build up.

Here's a weird symptom I've been having. Been on no grain, no legumes for about a month. Before that they were minimal and always prepared according to WAPF directions. I feel great, but this past couple weeks I've been getting a weird earwax build up. I haven't q-tipped regularly in years so that's not a new change. This is totally too much information, but the wax is a very dark yellow. Also, on occasion my ears have been popping and ringing. Any thoughts?

UPDATE: This symptom went entirely away with the reintroduction of gluten (the reintroduction didn't go well). It came back 5 days after gluten was again removed.

Update 2: The symptoms have largely gone away. I did reintroduce gluten again (pancakes and football... How could I say no?) and got a quick, four day long ear infection.

This symptom did go away after switching to a higher carb paleo.

Just researched this as my daughter and i tried this... if you would llke to try this your self, first burn one without putting inyour ears....then if you must...do your ears...you will get teh same results.... but your ears feel mysteriously clean...well the warmth of the heat and air warms any wax in the canals and it drains back down INTO YOUR EARS....causing build up and possible compaction... also you tube it....you can see burnt ear drums etc...

Ear wax candles don't work, and are dangerous to your ears. I strongly recommend against them.

They do that ear wax candle procedure at a salon near my home. I want to try it someday.

My guess is it isn't an ear infection as I haven ever had one before (or I haven't been diagnosed with on ever). It's the most pronounce negative symptom I've had that seems to be correlated with me switching off of the grains and legumes.

Yep, less jaw movement could slow down natural earwax travel. Seems to me also that softer foods that require less chewing could also have an influence. THey say that in ancient times, foods were typically much tougher to chew than now. Plus underdeveloped ear canals and jaw muscles would contribute to less flow and less chewing. Could be a whole host of influences contributing to overall weakness and susceptibility to probs. However, the more specific question here is if Andrew's prob is related to paleo and if so, how? Not sure on that one.

Doctors are saying now to not stick things in your ears and to not try to remove earwax cuz all you typically accomplish is jamming up the earwax back into your ear. Best to let it come out naturally and only intervene if excess buildup has resulted in blockage/hearing problems.

Of course also have a look at this earlier thread, which has lots of good links and answers: http://paleohacks.com/questions/3257/ear-wax-should-it-stay-or-should-it-go

Wow, none of these things had ever occurred to me. ... So it seems one conclusion we could draw, if I understand you correctly, is that TMJ or TMJ-like symptoms, in hindering proper jaw movement, could lead to ear wax buildup.

My ears have also been popping and ringing since going Paleo. I also notice an occasional distortion in my left ear. Strange.

More buildup suggests either decreased drainage or increased wax production or both. Ear wax is 30 to 50% lipid so increased lipid intake might (or might not) increase production (long shot guess on that point). Ear wax is important for lubrication, cleaning, and antibacterial and antifungal aspect of ear health. Jaw movement contributes to the conveyer belt of ear wax removal, so theoretically, decreased food consumption or decreased jaw movement might contribute to decreased removal (just a guess). Also, a change in consistancy of the earwax could alter drainage. I have also heard doctors say that people with narrow ear canals tend to have more problems. Since ear canal development in childhood may be negatively effected by poor diet, this could also contribute to a tendency towards problems (see, told ya it was the fault of grains!
;-) Then again, could just be a minor ear infection and unrelated to paleo. Ear infections are common.

I have heard slightly warm olive oil put in ear and then drained out can help with ear health.

Sorry to revived this ancient thread. There was a more recent one but I can't find it.

I suspect paleo changes the character of the mucus (sp?) we call wax. , that's all.

I've been having symptoms of waxy ears, popping and pressure and whatnot, and this is familiar to me, part of my anatomy I guess, poor drainage or something, but there's been a change since the change of diet, so I didn't recognize it for what it was, thought it was eustacian tube related. It didn't get progressively worse like it used to, didn't drive me to desperate measure of opening the medicine cabinet and using my little irrigation syringe. (Yeah, I'm a real slouch.)

So anyway, last night I finally did syringe the ear, and everything is okay now. It was just wax, all along, but not as goopy as it used to be. Go figure.

I used to have this problem when I was younger. My mom actually used to use ear wax candles that sucked the wax out. Not sure if that would help..or how safe they are ( USE WITH A FRIEND) but all the wax that would come out would be interesting to my siblings and I

When I get an ear infection from swimming, I treat it with half vinegar, half water. You could try the same here. The mixture will kill any bugs that need killing in your ear.

Also, drop dairy if you haven't done so already.

This is pretty funny to me. I thought I was slipping in the ear cleaning department. Ear wax build up is very new issue for me as well.
