If you were Obama's physician, what dietary changes would you advise?

I would expect that almost 100% of the paleo people following this resource could give better dietary advise than the "Doctors" mentioned in this report.

No mention of getting a NMR or VAP blood test to measure particle size, i.e. small dense LDL vrs large, fluffy protective LDL lipids.

Statins are even mentioned with a rising total cholesterol of 209 and a rising LDL. Perhaps the President is eating more meat and fat and less carbs than pre White House cooking staff. Fasting BG of 87, which is excellent.

What do you think?

Washington, DC - Keen as ever to chew the fat when it comes to the personal health information of their most prominent citizens, US media are busy mulling over President Barack Obama's mounting cholesterol levels.

According to almost every major American media outlet, Obama's physician has declared the US commander in chief "fit for duty" but notes that his total-cholesterol levels have spiked from 173 mg/dL in July 2008 to 209 mg/dL in a recent checkup. His LDL is up, at 138 mg/dL, from 96 mg/dL at his last exam, and his HDL has dipped from 68 mg/dL to 62 mg/dL.

Obama is already known to be an avid and regular exerciser. Reports also note that Obama still has an occasional cigarette and has a penchant for fast foods and desserts.

White House physician Navy Capt Jeffrey Kuhlman has reportedly recommended that the president modify his diet to get his LDL under 130 mg/dL; Kuhlman has recommended that Obama come back for his next check-up when he turns 50 in the summer of 2011. Kuhlman's full report on Obama is available online. It notes that Obama is 6' 1", weighs 179.9 lbs (82 kg), and has a body-mass index (BMI) of 23.7, a pulse rate of 56 beats per minute, and blood pressure of 105/62 mm Hg. Both ECG and electron-beam computed-tomography (EBCT) tests were "normal," his CRP was 0.015, and his fasting blood sugar was 87 (no units provided for either).

Commenting on Obama's health to heartwire, Dr Howard S Weintraub (New York University School of Medicine) said that had he not known Obama's CRP, he might have recommended a statin, but given his low CRP and other "excellent" risk factors, Weintraub said he'd be happy to see Obama try to lower his cholesterol through diet, and most important, quitting smoking full-stop.

"I disagree with the president's physician who says don't worry, come back in a year in a half. I would want his blood tests repeated in three to six months, and I'd also want to be sure that he is making greater efforts to stop smoking. Our absence of concerns could rapidly change. I don't want to give him a year or more to bathe his coronaries in atherogenic goop."

Also reviewing Obama's cardiovascular details for heartwire, Dr Christopher Cannon (Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA) emphasized that Obama did not meet the criteria for a statin based on JUPITER criteria, since his hs-CRP is so low, and his overall risk factor profile is very good.

"His cholesterol is a bit high, but I calculated his Framingham risk score???it is 2%," Cannon said. "He apparently had an EBCT, but the exact result has not yet been released. I would be very interested in his calcium score. If it were 0, then I would likely recommend diet intervention and rechecking. But if his calcium score were elevated, that would suggest that the process of atherosclerosis had started, and a statin would be more reasonable."

Details on his eyesight, left-leg tendinitis, and colon are also available online.

@missionman, the definition of small "f" fascist varies, depending on the source. Private corporations do not necessarily win under fascism. Also, the term "corporatist" refers to interest groups, which are not necessarily the same as incorporated businesses. Under fascism, a central government (as opposed to market forces) controls which interest groups will win or lose. There was nothing wrong with Dave's use of the term "fascists." However, your first sentence was insulting.

Do you even know what a fascist is. (From wikipedia) 'Fascists seek to organize a nation according to corporatist perspectives, values, and systems'. By nationalizing (single payer) health care, the coporations (insurance providers) lose. Ditching it now, they win

Nutrition and health are not isolated issues. They are intimately entwined with government policy, politics, economics, etc. As for vitriol, I heard that the Tuscon shooter was inspired by threads such as this one (sarc.)

Stop all federal funding for research in support of the "cholesterol hypothesis." Abolish the USDA and ag. subsidies, and scrap the food pyramid. Give people back the freedom (for example) to drink any milk, eat any pistachio, or take any vitamin that they choose. Sorry for the rant.

Not sure why Obama should be a special case. The recommendations would be the same for pretty much anyone:

  1. Stop smoking
  2. Get a job with less stress
  3. Stop testing for lipids (the heart disease / lipid hypothesis is bunk)
  4. Start on the PaNu 12 Steps

I'm new to the forum, but is this really a place for vitriolic political comments? I was under the impression it was about nutrition and health.

One of the countless quirks of our media-drenched culture is, once a year, we get to poke our nose into the President's routine physical. And then a bunch of people in suits who sit on their duffs all day under artificial lighting get to be impressed by this part, and tut-tut over this part, and sound oh-so-smart about it.

BREAKING NEWS: Washington DC resident follows standard American diet, works out obsessively, is pretty lean for it, but has curious numbers on tests of questionable utility and no numbers on tests of interest to enlightened (but fringe) group of Internet users. Also, he probably smokes sometimes, OMG!!!

I should have known better than to click into this question.

I would advise him to retire immediately for the sake of his health as well as the health of our country!

Clearly the stress from being in a job he is not qualified for is ruining his health and his policies are ruining our country..

BP and RHR are fairly impressive for his age and occupation. Though the details about his colon are online, I think I'll pass.

For the CrossFit/strength training crowd:

It notes that Obama is 6' 1", weighs 179.9 lbs (82 kg)

Tell him to do some heavy squats and drink some whole milk? (Preferably grassfed and raw.)

In all seriousness, not really much to say about this one except ditch the grains and sugar and vegetable oils and take some vitamin D and maybe fish oil.
