Ladies - Any Advice on Home Treatment for Bartholin Gland Cyst?

Commented on December 08, 2017

A bartholin gland cyst - not infected but uncomfortable and quite large. Have tried sitz baths 3-4 times daily with/without epsom salts/sea salts. Anyone had this problem or have any suggestions? I am Paleo and am otherwise 100% healthy. Not a great ailment :o(

So,  I've had several of these cyst.  First time I had one operated on was 2weeks prior to having my first child/ren.  Twins.  I had a spinal and relief was instant.  I've leaned,  the beginning pain almost reminds me of a hair being continuously pulled,  down there.  Aggravating,  annoying,  noticeable,  and uncomfortable.  There's no relief.  But today,  I read something that ive never heard before, (and I Google EVERYTHING) and it made sense.  Wish I'd seen it sooner.  I've never been regular with the #2s. Matter fact,  thanksgiving I'd gone over 4 weeks without a, stool.  For me once a week is good.  Once every 2 weeks is okay.  But the last few days of going into week 5.....dizzy. No energy.  Weak. Blacking out. I gave myself a, supository for the first time.  Since then I've went 3x.  Today,  I strained pretty good and all of a sudden,  that "pulling of a hair" sensation is back. And I bet,  just about every time I've got a BC,  was due to a time like this. Hot compress is what ive used to just my last 3or 4 cyct.  Pain killers are great but they require doctors and doctors wanna poke with needles and only give novacain for the pain.  Last I checked,  that crap don't work on infected areas.  I ask for spinal and I'm told I got the spinal the first time because I was high risk pregnant and they didn't want me to stress the babies.  So now,  I try to deal at home.  Thanks to junkies,  most ppl that need pain meds can't get them anyway anymore.  I hope this helps.  Stops straining

I am 24 years old. I have been getting bartholin cysts since I was 17. My family is prone to getting cysts in general. I only get mind every once in a while and always on the left side of my lip. It's always painful. That's how I know it's there. It has never once started off just being there then starting to hurt. One day I'm fine the next day I'm in pain and there's a lump. I used to use the hot water bottle method and wait for it to go away. That usually works. However this time is way wirse. I just saw my gyn and have no stds. TMI but I only do oral at this time and my bf was already cleared afyer testing. Alot of women only experience pain after a while. Mine starts with pain and some form ofor redness. it's the size of a grape. it hurts too much to apply pressure to pop. does anyone have any other ideas? I'm going on vacation to Orlando studios and that requires alot of standing and sitting up. I really want this gone and my next gyn appt that works with my job isn't for another 3 weeks.

I recently got my first BC a month ago. It is painless, grape size lump, no pus, not infected, hard and firm to touch.

I have tried some remedies. Tea tree oil sitz bath, tea tree oil applied directly to my BC for 3days now. Size doesn't change. Stays the same. Yesterday I have started taking serrapeptase 40,000 units (this is the only potency I managed to get) 2pills 3x a day on empty stomach.

I am loosing my hope. Can anybody help me with this thing. Pleassssse help. I appreciate every answer. I want to be BC Free.

Ridiculous. This person doesn't know what they're talking about. Iodine deficiency is linked to these cysts!

DO NOT try this persons suggestion. You will end up in hospital with blood poisoning. This person is obviously not a professional, and is being highly irresponsible recommending this method.

And I appreciate the author including a warning about this method in her post.

It doesn't seem to work to add a longer comment, so I will write my experience in a new post.

I think one of the things that MathGirl was including with her statement was that often once in a long term commitment, people no longer get tested for STD's- one of you could have picked up an STD pre-marriage that never got screened for. I know 30somethings and 40somethings that got married in their 20's and didn't find out they had an STD until pregnancy or even later in life b/c they hadn't been tested since marriage. It's something that people should just be aware of.

This comment is of no help. My husband and I not only spend all our free time together but we also work together - so how an std slipped in there would be miraculous. I asked for help on alleviating cysts. If you read the research you will see that there is no real known cause for these types of cysts. It is just a blocked duct which can even be from soaps.

MayaBee, married people can get STDs, too. Not a pleasant thought, but it is possible.

Already seen a doctor - just waiting to see the specialist. These can spring up from anywhere not just STD related - I am married anyway. They can be from a lot of sources. Vitamin D supplements for a while now.

Now that I have gone through the experience and I would like to answer my own question - or at least detail my own experience - in the hope that it may help others in the future.

While I was still waiting for the specialist appointment the cyst got painful and I just sat on the couch with a hot water bottle and took painkillers only at night. Although I continued with sitz baths I can confidently state that they really do not do anything to help the cyst. Then the night before my appointment the cyst burst. This was a relief to me but not the specialist who told me that had I come in a day earlier she would have sent me straight to the operating theatre. Well personally I was happy it had burst so that I could "try" and see if it would stay away rather than opting for surgery straight off the bat. She put me on antibiotics for a few days and wanted me to come back for a follow up appointment as I was only a few weeks away from heading off on a lengthy overseas trip.

The specialist was surprised I didn't go to the emergency room as the cyst was huge - the size of a golf ball and a half. But I can honestly say that while it was uncomfortable it was still bearable - but I guess it depends on your personal pain threshold. While I was there she also confidently stated that the cyst would come back and that I would need surgery. She also took a swab from the cyst (which believe me was more painful than the cyst itself!). The infection turned out to have been caused by a simple skin bacteria.

I went on my holiday to Europe and upon return I fell pregnant straight away. A few months into the pregnany the cyst started to come back - much smaller but I could feel it and so could my obstetrician. My obstetrician preferred to take the "Wait and see" approach rather than rushing into surgery - especially with the pregnancy. This is where I took a completely different approach to the cyst:

Rather than seeing the cyst as something which needed to be brought out and "burst", I instead took the approach of the bacteria itself. I took a stong probiotic every single day as well as ate plenty of yoghurt, kefir and some fermented foods. Two weeks later the cyst was completely gone. I am continuing to keep these foods and probiotics in my diet (which I think are great for pregnancy anyway) and all is still good. I actually suspect my poor diet in Europe (not Paleo for this once only trip) and lack of probiotics may have encouraged the cyst to come back for a second time.

Lots of vitamin C. Check your D. Hold off iodine. No fried foods of any kind (no heated oils). If it hurts, I dispute idea that it isn't infected. Turn yourself in to medical care. Hot soaks with salt water should have done it. Get STD tested (not joking).

Hi Ladies!

I have never posted on any type of blog but I know how miserable these Bartholin Cyst's can be so I have to let you all know what I did that helped me. After having a BC for about 3 months, the size of an egg and painful at times, I finally last week got rid of it after one week of diet change. Before this attempt I tried the usual warm compressions, tea tree oil, witch hazel, pretty much every home remedy I have read online and none seemed to help. This made me realize it had to be my diet. I stopped eating soy, chocolate, fried foods, refined sugar, white carbohydrates, caffine, as well as drinking sugary drinks. I ate only vegetables, grains and nuts and minimal fruit (because of high sugar). Also, I started boiling vegetables instead of the normal frying with olive oil. Then I took milk thistle pills as well as Silica pills (one of each). I read online silica is a good remedy. But I took the silica alone without changing my diet and didnt see much results on my cyst. After this diet change and the milk thistle and silica my cyst was gone. I had a busy weekend moving houses and had 2 days of fried food and a bit of chocolate for stress ;) Then bam! The cyst was back. So I really do believe it is related to your diet and suggest trying what I did. It took me many attempts to get rid of this thing and I am so stoked to give it another go. CHEERS LADIES N GOOD LUCK!

For all the women suffering with these – I have so much compassion for you! I’m 37 and I’ve had them six times in the past six years, and I feel desperate and devastated every time.

This last time I finally, finally managed to do something that worked and let me avoid the hospital. I basically gathered ALL the resources I could and did everything all at once so I’m not sure which of these things, or which combination of things, is what did it – but in any case the cyst resolved – as in was reabsorbed WITHOUT BURSTING – within four days, and I’m so, so grateful.

*a note that it’s really important to consult with a registered Naturopath or Homeopath to consider your specific situation.

But meanwhile this may help some of you.

Here’s what I did – I’ll list things in what I think is the order of most importance:

1. homeopathic protocol including:

- one dose of homeopathic calcarea fluorica 30 ch (for continued treatment, one dose a week)

- the cell salt version of calcarea fluorica 6x three times a day

- liquid iodine, Trophic brand, beginning with 10 drops the first day, 12 drops the second, 14 the third (continue with 14 drops / day)

------------ this might be enough for some people, but I had to add:

- Unda numbers 1, 20, and 243 (for help with lymph drainage): take 5 drops of #1, wait a minute, take 5 drops of #20, wait a minute, take 5 drops of #243, wait a minute – and repeat 3x/day

----- DO ALL THIS FOR THREE MONTHS -----

2. clay packs

- I used dry pure green clay (you can get it in health food stores in the cosmetic section, just make sure it doesn’t have anything added to it) and mixed it with enough water to make a paste. Mix the clay and leave it for at least an hour before using – it will keep indefinitely so no need to worry about mixing too much or leaving it (way) longer than an hour

- use a thin strip of cotton, place a pile of clay in the middle – enough to cover the whole cyst area, about 1cm deep

- place the clay directly against the cyst

- cover the cotton with a strip of wool

- put underwear overtop

----- CHANGE THE CLAY PACK EVERY HOUR OR EVERY TWO HOURS DURING THE DAY, OK TO LEAVE IT ON LONGER AT NIGHT

3. 1 dose of homeopathic Pulsatilla 200ch (for pain)

4. Chinese herbs

- I was taking a herbal formula (tea) prescribed by a TCM practitioner for cleansing the liver and strengthening the kidneys (again, it’s important to be diagnosed in person by a TCM doctor to get the right combination of herbs for you)

5. Avoiding alcohol, sugars, dairy, gluten, other things you think you might be sensitive to

6. sitz baths with salt (not epsom, sea salt), and tea tree and lavender essential oils

* of all these things, the homeopathic protocol was by far the most important, so you could just try that. Or the clay packs.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!

I am 32 yo and have been suffering with bartholin cysts for about 5 years now. I'm healthy, 5'8, 140lbs, non smoker, never had kids.  I can honestly say I have tried everything. Sitz baths with and without salt , tea tree oil, clay compresses, the phobes method, the batholin cyst miracle method, diet changes, drawing salve, mucinex, heating pads, super silica, vit B, C, lavender, seppenese, tea bag compresses, Tumeric, poking it with a needle, antibiotics, praying on my knees, you name it i've tried it. Nothing really works and mine has NEVER burst on its own. Countless obgyns just send you home with antibiotics and tell you to sit in the bath.  Mine has always been on the left side and really has never went way, it would flare up , id use a heating pad, do some baths, pain would go away, a month later same thing until one day it was so big that the entire left side of my vagina, clitoris, outer and inner labia was so huge and painful i couldnt walk, move, nothing. I was screaming hunched over pleading with God to help me. Never felt pain like this in my life. My obgyn couldnt see me for 2 days, so into the ER i went. My boyfriend had to carry me to the car where i layed seat down on my side, no seatbelt, screeching everytime we went over a bump. I chewed off the poor nurses head when she asked me to sit down in the waiting room for the 3rd time " I told you you stupid beep i cannot sit the beep down if you dont get me a dr now i'm going to flip the beep out and you dont beeping want to see that i promise" ugh .. i turned into satan, i feel horrible.  Same thing, antibiotics, percoet, and baths. FInally my obgyn appt, the dr was so shocked at the mass in my vagina at first he said " this is no Barth"  then after poking around and another obgyn they stuck a needle in the bottom of it and injected me with a local anestetic WHOAH the Pain is indescribable, then she made a small incision in the bottom where the skin was the thinnest and pressed on it. i could feel what seemed like buckets draining out of me and imediate relief. It did not smell, but was a lot of puss and blood. She then inserted a word catheter and i left. It was very sore the first week. I kept it in for 4 weeks and it fell out on its own. This was in November. It is now march so 4 months. Until 2 days ago i thought Thank the Heavens this thing is finally gone. Then as I'm washing myself in the shower i feel a small lump, same place left side. It's now the size of a walnut again and i'm back in the bath. Ive had it with this thing, I'm so tired of suffering and I cant bear going back and getting stabbed with needles and sliced open again. I dont know whats worse, dealing with it or going to the Dr and going through that horrid excruciating procedure again. Theres got to be a cure for these things, 150k people have viewed this thread so were not alone.  Is any Dr out there working on a cure? If so How do I get involved, donate, something? I cant imagine watching a loved one, or anyone for that matter having to endure this pain. I know we've all been to hell and back.  Sitting here again with a giant barth ... FML Literally !!! :(

Hey i had a bartholin cyst for over 2 years. It abscessed after 4 months, and I had to get it cut, drained, and a catheter put in, that fell out the next day.

Im hoping your bartholin cyst is gone by now. I came across some info about Serrapeptase on the internet in May when i woke up with a bigger than usual aching bartholin cyst. I took Doctors Best Serrapeptase 40,000 units 2 pills, twice a day. 2 pills when i wake up, a hour before breakfast.  Then 2 pills, two hours after dinner to give my food time to digest. The pills are not to be taken with meals.

It took less than 2 weeks and the bartholin cyst was completely gone! It literally was shrinking day by day.

I just had gyno appt this past Tues. The doctor excited that it was gone and wanted know how. I told her about serrapeptase and she searched it on her laptop. The doctor was so excited about that finding, she said she is gonna start prescibing it to her bartholin cyst suffering patients.

They have nothing to do with Sri or whatever else. I'm only 19 and suffered with these for 7 years and still ongoing. I'm 33 weeks pregnant and see to get worse, especially since the hospital can't operate on them no more! They appear any part of the body nothing to do with sweat glands or what ever else since I get them on my ear and nose. Nothing to do with shaving or ingrown go hairs. Some people are just prone to them for a very long time and eventually you'll stop getting them. Only thing you can do is take antibiotics. Changing life style, stopping smoking changing to hair removel cream won't stop them appearing. Nothing causes them they just come and go when they please!

After dealing with these for 10 years now, I have finally found a home remedy that works.

-silica supplements

-topical herbal tincture of lavendar, rosemary, nettle, lemon balm, comfrey, plantain, yarrow, sage, chickweed, rose petals, & jewelweed in olive oil and sunflower (incredibly soothing)

-heating pad applied anytime you are sitting and through the night (so soothing and also increases blood flow and brings white blood cells to the area)

The pain is much more bearable with this method and the cyst bursts within 5-7 days.

This was my second run in with my left BG. This time it came on very quickly. I diligently sat in the bath tub 4-5 times daily with salt. However, please be very careful if using tea tree oil as it will cause a chemical burn if not diluted and that will greatly increase the pain that is already unbearable and horrid. The night before I went to the doctor my husband was giving me ice packs, drawing baths, giving me antibiotics and I slept a little that night(this was day #7). The next morning I woke up at 4 am in overwhelming pain and walked hunched over and drew a warm bath. I found if you draw a bath, making sure the pelvic region is covered does relieve the pain. Afterwards I slung my feet over the footboard of my sleigh bed to mimic he natural flow of the gland. When I got in the car to go to the doctors my husband was being soo slow as I was crying and passing out in pain. As I sat in the hollering for him, I all of a sudden felt liquid all over my vagina, dress, and it was running down my leg. Prior to this the only fluid to come out on its own was clear. My goodness the smell of the abscess was overwhelming. It drained for close to 3 hours. I went to my appointment and following up in a week. Since it ruptured on its own, THIS WAS AN ABSCESS NOT A CYST, and I was already on antibiotics, the doctor told me to do warm bath, ice pack 15 mins, followed by heat to encourage contraction and expansion which allowed my abscess to rupture. I had a very by painful 8 days, I cried, I begged god and I took the pain without narcotic pain meds. Ibuprofen 400 mg when ever I did not feel well, Tylenol 200 mg twice a day, and antibiotics. The pain is unreal, I have never had a child but I hear that the pain of a Bartholin's gland absent is far worse. I was in agony for eight days. I am thankful it ruptured, and I will do everything I can to make sure that it does not affect again in the future. Proper maintenance and care, wearing clean cotton underwear to wick away the moisture from the area, and having the fluid that comes from obsessed culture, are very important things to do. It is a necessity to find out the exact bacteria that caused the blockage, to enable the prescribing physician to prescribe the exact antibiotic for the infection.

I tried all kinds of things but I finally found what works for me. I got a book called the Bartholin Miracle Method and it has a lot of stuff in it. It's a pretty intense home treatment but it worked for me. It took about a week and a half and my cyst was gone. One thing was serrapeptase which seemed to really help shrink it but I think you need to do the whole method.

These little devils are the worst!! I had one a few weeks ago and I've never felt anything like that in my life! I woke up the morning I was leaving for Florida and went straight to the E.R because I was in so much pain. They shoved a needle through it to numb it and then took a scalpel and cut right down the side of it. I must say I'm pretty sure the whole hospital heard me screaming and crying.. After that they packed the freshly squeezed "cyst" with a type of gauze so it could drain for a few days... Four days went by and I was finally able to pull the gauze out!! Which wasn't the best feeling thing in the world... Ehh... Anyway I'm all healed up now and just praying to god that another one doesn't pop up! Good luck ladies!

Took years to figure it out..but the cause for me was, the seams in my pants (and pantyliners) :-O !! I know, really? Heat and friction were my problem.

Too bulky of seams (jeans) and too short of a rise (waist band to crotch -measurement) I trimmed the seams or wear a longer rise, avoid the pantyliners wear possible, and I don't have a problem.

Just a thought I'm passing along.

they do burst eventually! you should never poke them or squeeze them! they are vile and horrid! not to mention depressing. to be honest I am amazed anyone could bear to go near them with a needle!!! my second burst a couple of weeks ago on its own using salt/witch hazel/tea tree oil in very hot baths! and my second was not abscessed. magnesium sulphate paste (used to bring boils to a head) directly on the cyst helped to burst mine!!! and i'll be keeping plenty of it in my medical cabinet for future cysts (I have had two, its likely i'll get another) in the meantime I'm cutting down on dairy and caffeine my lifestyle has been pretty unhealthy so I'm going to make an effort to eat better! I don't think stress helps either but who can help that?? I would not consider the op too many horror stories and people have had them come back! besides... I do not want to be a dried up old lady at 35!!! just when you think they wont burst they do! and the relief is magic, when mine burst I carried on with my salt baths to not get it infected! sick of the sight of my bathroom. I am just going to have to live with them. mine came 10 months apart and if I don't get another for 10 months then i'll be happy... ish!

I am 31 now, but I have suffered Bartholins Cysts since I was a teenager. Of course, I didn't know what they were - I found the first lump when I was about 18 and freaked out. My GP didn't know what it was, and gave me a referral for a specialist. I never took her up on that referral, instead it burst on its own a while later.

Over the years I have had about 6-10 cysts which have burst naturally each time, but varying in length and size each time. Generally, they came out when I was pregnant. During my first two pregnancies it was no problem, however during my third, my cyst became so large and enflamed that my midwife worried that it could be Deep Vein Thrombosis. Because I'd never had a diagnosis on it before, I let her rush me into the obstetrics ward at the local hospital (who are notorious for misdiagnosis and maltreatment). By the time they got to me it was late at night and the resident was tired. She said it was a Bartholins cyst, gave me a dose of antibiotics and told me to come back in the morning and that if it wasn't going down then she would have to do a marsupialisation (which meant putting me under general anaesthetic, cutting it open and feeling around inside of it to break up any walls) or she could just stick a needle into it and drain it. Being pregnant, I wasn't keen on the marsupialisation, so I deliberately ate breakfast in the morning so they couldn't put me under a general. Instead, they used a local and a needle and drained a huge amount of liquid out. It was bruised, and sore for days. After a week I called my midwife to ask a question about the new antibiotics I'd been put on. She happened to have the head obstetrician from the local hospital in the room with her (ie the residents boss!). He was furious that she had drained it, and insisted that I come in straight away to have it lanced, which he did quickly and reasonably pain-free. It healed well, and I didn't have another problem...until now, when my baby is 5 months old. The cyst came back with a vengeance last weekend. After three days it was pure agony, and after researching online I decided that I had to try a natural cure. I started sitz baths straight away, along with a good quality iodine supplement. I also started large, regular doses of good quality probiotic powder & large doses of ascorbic acid powder. By this stage, my cyst was already enormous, and painful. I then found out about the "Bartholins Cyst Miracle Method" - an e-book that you can buy online for only about $9. I started her methods of sitz baths, and her compresses. I couldn't do the night time routine that she recommended because my cyst was so large that I found it excruciating to have anything on the cyst whilst moving around (I was still getting up to feed my baby twice a night) I also started taking Serrapeptase - a supplement which is meant to break up cysts. And I cut out sugar from my diet completely. I then called my classically trained homeopath. He was extremely confident that he could fix my cyst. He seconded my decision to take an iodine supplement, and the sitz baths. He sent me a good quality serrapeptase supplement to take, along with a homeopathic remedy that he had made specifically for me and my emotional state. The night before my homeopathics arrived, I spent two hours sleeping in a hot sitz bath simply because lying down was pure agony. By this stage, my cyst was about the size of a large egg or perhaps a small lemon. I couldn't carry my baby much, it was difficult to get up or down. Standing, walking, sitting and lying down hurt immensely and I was spending long periods crying from the pain. My husband was getting up and bringing our baby into bed for feeds at night. My friend was coming over every morning to play with her while she was awake. My in laws were doing the school runs for my older children, and I was stuck on my back. I took my homeopathics faithfully, as prescribed on the day they arrived (a Friday). My cyst didn't get better, in fact it seemed to get worse. I was eating all my meals in bed, and I couldn't do anything! On Friday night, at about midnight my cyst became so agonising that I was sobbing and praying to god/whoever would listen. My husband ran another sitz bath for me and I dozed fitfully, but not comfortably in there for about two hours before my baby needed a feed. When I got back to bed, he said that if it didn't burst by the next day (Saturday) he was calling an ambulance and sending me into the ER. I think he was seriously scared for me and my life. He said since that he'd seen me go through three drug-free births, but never seen me cry and thrash about like I did with this cyst. He was truly worried. I decided to use the 'emergency' dosage that my homeopath had prescribed if the remedy didn't work within 3 days. This was a 2-hourly dosage. I took one dose at 1:45am, the next at 3:45am and at the 1:45am dose I also put on a compress as prescribed by the 'bartholin cyst miracle method' but I didn't heat it. I did it simply to stop the skin drying out, to perhaps stop the pain getting so excruciating so that I could sleep. At this stage, I really hadn't slept for 3 days! At 5:30 my baby girl woke up for a feed, and as my husband was taking her to put back into her cot, I felt my cyst...and It didn't hurt! He rushed her into her bed, and I peeled back the compress to find a mess of blood and mucous - thankfully I'd been sleeping on a towel! The cyst had burst. I'm still not sure if the gland has re-opened, or if it has somehow created a new tear? (Not even sure if that's possible though). As I type now, I am in my fifth or sixth sitz bath for the day in order to avoid infection. I still feel ridiculously weak, and I sweat a lot still - I think I'm detoxing from the sitz baths actually, plus sweating out the sickness. My cyst has gone down from the size of a small lemon to the size of a large marble, and is still leaking blood. It is solid, but nowhere near as painful as the lump which preceded it. I plan to keep taking my homeopathics, and my homeopath tells me that these will stop the cysts reoccurring. I also plan to continue weekly sitz baths to keep them at bay. I truly hope that this helps someone out there. Have hope. If I can do this, then you can too! I thought I had no hope left of this bursting naturally, and it did! (And FYI the person who recommended self-draining should be removed! You'll end up in hospital with blood poisoning if you do that!!!! You're no professional)

I am currently experiencing my second bartholin cyst. The first was an abscess which was the most painful thing I have ever encountered (and I have had two children!!) I had no idea what this golf ball sized thing on my vagina was but after researching I discovered I had an infected bartholin abscess! These things are evil and there is little information available about them. Mine was at the point of excruciation before I could do anything and I could only do a crab style crawl around my house let alone get into the doctors surgery! So I started taking hot as I could stand baths with salt, tea tree oil and witch hazel and drinking lots and lots of water!! And laying in bed legs akimbo with hot flannels pressed against my cyst! I was taking ibuprofen which did jack!! Nothing touches the pain of these once they are infected! Do not use sudocrem or fucidin cream they did nothing for me. The only thing that helped was lion ointment available very cheap on amazon! Tea tree oil stung like a ba$#@rd! And only made it worse (only try this if you are brave enough) after a week and at my lowest ebb seriously depressed I dragged myself into a red hot bath of salt! Then went and laid back on the bed, had a sudden coughing fit... and lo and behold it burst!!!!! The relief was instant! It was vile and the smell was like I imagine decaying flesh smells like.. it was also pale green! But I almost cried with happiness! it continued to leak for about 3 days! And I took about 5 hot salt baths containing tea tree oil and witch hazel every day until it stopped! All has been well since... until last saturday I felt a little bruised when sitting down and upon investigation I found the dreaded thing is back (its been 9 months) while not painful like the last its just uncomfortable and annoying! So im hoping catching this thing early is the way to go so im doing my baths everyday and applying lion ointment directly to the cyst hoping it will drain on its own before it gets horrificly painful! Last night I tried pheobes remedy.. This has only made me incredibly itchy!!! So I give up on that and keeping up with the lion ointment. The warming properties really help ease discomfort and make walking around easier! These things are evil! Embarrassing and put an end to any sex life!

hello,my name is michelle from philippines, currently working here in chiang mai thailand as a teacher.i experienced bartholin cyst 2011 and i got minor operation under local anesthesia, which is so painful that there is no word to explain..it came back last year last week of november and i got minor operation under general anesthesia though it was painful coz i waited much longer and the cyst got bigger to the extent that i cant walk or sit or whatever position.after the operation i was okay until last sunday i felt the symptoms again,i was worried and afraid of having an operation again.i went to my gyno he gave me antibiotics but i searched in the internet about home remedies,i ended up sitz bath with sea salt 3-4 times a day since monday and tuesday nothings happen.i tried sitz bath again, put sea salt, tea tree oil and aplle cidar vinegar altogether for 15-20 min,and then take a shower to wash and then i took cotton soak it with warm water with tea tree oil with calamine lotion every 20min and then sitz bath,it was so painful and the cyst was big like a ping-pong ball,so much pain,i just cried and telling myself it will burst,as what i said no words to explain how painful it was,i was thinking any bumps/cyst that has pus inside has to be big enough and painful to burst like pimples.thanks god i woke up early morning and so much less pain and i look at it it burst,so stinky smell, but no more pain, now,im still doing the routine like what i did before it burst..thanks god!im recovering now...i just want to share my experienced which is horrible...i hope this will help to all women like me who had this... michelle

I've have a recurring bartholin cyst now for about six years. It would come and go depending on sexual intercourse/sexual arousal, mostly. I've had doctors incise the cyst a few times. I've also drained the cyst at home on my own more times than i've been to the doctor. The first time the doctor incised it they never inserted a catheter. This is a huge, if you don't have a catheter inserted and kept in place for 4-6 weeks the incision and gland will most likely close up. This means that you will most likely have future infections and/or recurring cysts because there is no open gland for your fluids to drain through. If you keep a catheter in place for the allotted time it is likely that you will not have another cyst. If you continue to get cysts and go to the doctor for incisions you will most likely start to build up scar tissue which makes it hard to keep a catheter in and harder for your gland to continue to reform. Rather than having multiple incisions you should probably talk to your doctor about marsupialization, if you have a recurring cyst.

In my case, i've built up scar tissue from multiple incisions. When I first got the cyst I did the hot sitz baths with epsom salt. When I first did those they didn't do much. Then I tried this product, http://www.kgstiles.com/bartholincyst-2/, pure plant essentials organic formula bartholin cyst by kgstiles. I used this a few times, putting the oils directly on the cyst. It did help reduce the size of the cyst. I used it a few times a day with sitz baths and used it for a few days. This seemed to work. Then at some point, I had a cyst that was infected. You know it is infected when it hurts and continues to get larger. The pure plant formula was not working. So then I tried acupuncture, chinese herbal medicine, and altering my diet. Nothing worked. I went back to the doctor and had yet another incision this time with a catheter. I had the catheter in place for six weeks. When it was removed I was noticing that after intercourse the fluids were draining normally. However, when I would shower after I would need to push on the gland so that the additional fluid would continue to drain. If I did not do this it would get backed up and would eventually turn into a cyst. When I get cysts now that don't seem to be draining on their own I will do a sitz bath, without salt, but with hydrogen peroxide to sanitize the water. I will try to do them as soon as a hard lump starts to form rather than wait to see if it drains on its own. However, when I do the bath I sit for about 10 minutes and then I start to push on the gland to squeeze the fluid out. I push on it from the inside and the outside, probably for about 5-10 minutes. When I do this I can see it draining into the bath. I will continue to do this a few times until it feels like it has drained out. This so far has been working for me.

In the past, I also tried the witch hazel, tea tree oil, calamine (found on someone else's post) and that just dried out my skin, bad idea. I also tried ginger tea bags, that didn't work either. I also tried the Silica and Thuja, I thought at first it was helping but it turned out that it wasn't doing the trick. If the baths don't work try the link I posted for the oils, if that doesn't work you should probably have the doctor drain it and put a catheter in. If you still continue to get them, you might need to do the surgery. After this entire journey, it seems that the surgery might be immanent for me since it is a lot of work to continue to drain manually.

I hope this is helpful for other women experiencing this problem.

I am not paleo but I read somewhere that goldenseal helps. The source I read only mentioned capsule form so that's what I bought, although the store also had liquid form. Note: you want goldenseal root, not herb. I took one capsule that day and about an hour later it burst. I don't know if this was a coincidence or not. I had had the cyst for about a week. I had taken sitz baths, with and without epsom salts and I had also tried a homeopathic recipe that called for calamine lotion, witch hazel, and tea tree oil (you may have read about that one). Good luck to everyone.

THIS IS A WARNING ABOUT TRYING TO PUNCTURE THE CYST YOURSELF.

I've had a Bartholin's cyst on and off for four years. When I read Sapna's post about a method for draining them yourself, I was hopeful - and although I hate needles and sharps, I liked the idea of being able to take things into my own hands. It did not turn out well for me, though.

I tried this when my cyst had been swollen to a painful size for about a week. I used a sterilized syringe and had all the equipment there (alcohol, sterile gauze). It's difficult to muster the courage to puncture it in the first place - the first prick I made did not go all the way through. The second time I did manage - and the cyst drained, of clear odourless fluid, and I had relief.. for about 10 minutes. Then I guess the tiny hole closed up again and within minutes the cyst was more swollen and I had a fever and sweats and was shaking. I was on vacation and my friend had to drive me three hours to Emergency.

This was the second time I had gone to Emerg. for the cyst. The first time, in another province, they put me under to do the incision - this time there was no anaesthetic (I am still shocked that this is regular procedure in many hospitals - to make a cut somewhere so intimate and painful without any topical anaesthetic - I just can't imagine that if this was a case of men's reproductive health that they would ever, EVER let someone with a scalpel near their testicles without some kind of anaesthetic). It took several days to heal (and I had to go back to Emerg. once during those days because the incision had closed up again and the cyst was swollen again - they wanted to make a second cut, but I absolutely didn't want to be cut again - and decided to wait it out. I'm so glad I did because the next morning the incision reopened and it drained itself).

I have had GREAT SUCCESS with homeopathy at other times - silica worked for me with my first flare-up (one dose of 200 c.), and sepia (one dose of 200 c.) worked one other time. Unfortunately these didn't work with my last flare-up. I've been back to the homeopath and am working with a new remedy to see if I can prevent them coming back.

Good luck and speedy healing to everyone, these are not fun. For more Paleo Diet hacks: http://paleohacks.com/questions/154892/ladies-any-advice-on-home-treatment-for-bartholin.html#ixzz2kLo0KPIQ Follow us: @PaleoHacks on Twitter | PaleoHacks on Facebook

I am having bartholin cyst problem since 3 years . it was very painful when it used to come. Once i went to a private doctor to treat my problem of cyst. He gave me a tube namely Clotrimazole & Trinidazole cream which is to use in infected area of vagina. Believe me it gave so much relief to me that it never happens again then after. I think its a best way to keep away from operation as it seems painful. Trust me try it .....

Ok... This is probably not a very professional thing for me to tell you but in some cases, you can take care of this problem at home. Although, if you have had a persistent Bartholin's cyst for 19 years you'll probably need a surgical intervention which really shouldn't be too traumatic, but won't be cheap. Anyway, Bartholin's cysts are considered idiopathic- meaning that nobody is exactly sure what causes them, but recent research has indicated that almost 70% of Bartholin's cysts are in some way related to infection with one or more organisms. Anyway... you probably don't care about all of this... just how to take care of this at home. first of all, I should tell you that doing this can make it much worse, and that what you really should do is see a doctor. However here's my extremely unprofessional recommendation for how to deal with this yourself; 1. first try the "Sitz Bath" where you sit in a tub in very hot water, see if this doesn't make it go away.. in your case, it probably won't because you've mentioned that you've had it for a very long time. 2. move on to plan B: self treat. first: go to a pharmacy and get a few 33 gage syringe needles (or as small as possible), sterile alcohol wipes and sterile gauze step 1. take a hot shower, cleanse the area with water but don't clean it too vigorously or use harsh soap etc. step 2. get out, dry off, wash your hands thoroughly step 3. use a few alcohol wipes and wipe off your fingers and hand step 4. take a new alcohol wipe and wipe off the cyst first and then the outer parts of your labia- if you stick to the outer parts of your vagina, this shouldn't be too unpleasant. step 5. uncap the needle, pull your labia and the cyst out so you can see it well. step 6. GENTLY touch the tip of the needle to the top of the cyst. It will hurt a little but not much at all because the cysts are usually so close to the surface that you should barely need to poke the needle into it at all. step 7. once you've poked the needle in, fluid should start coming out- you can either aspirate it with the syringe or gently, from the base of the cyst (with your clean hand) place pressure to push the fluid out. a true, uncomplicated bartholin's cyst should start draining very easily, the fluid should be clear, should not smell, should be slightly sticky, and there shouldn't really be any blood involved in this process. If you put the very tip of the needle in and nothing comes out, don't go any further. You may not have a bartholin's cyst after all and you may just be poking around making it worse

step 8. wipe with alcohol once more. step 9. Sit there with your legs open for 10 minutes, to allow the hole (which should be minuscule) to close up. step 10. take the sterile gauze, fold it slightly into your labia to keep the (former) cyst from touching the other, dirty parts of your vagina, put clean underwear on. in all honesty- this isn't a whole lot different from what your doctor would do to drain it. Follow up- your biggest concern here should be infection- watch obsessively for infection. If the area begins to hurt more, feel warm, have pus or drainage that is anything but clear, then you've probably become infected and should go to the doctor right away. also: FOR 14 AFTERWARD : Do NOT take a bath. Do not have sex or touch the area, do not douche or generally mess with the area at all, Wear loose clothing, wear cotton underwear that breathes well, and be vigilant to wipe front-to-back (as you always should)

This should work pretty well.

It doesn't seem to work to add a longer comment, so I will write my experience in a new post.

DO NOT try this persons suggestion. You will end up in hospital with blood poisoning. This person is obviously not a professional, and is being highly irresponsible recommending this method.
