Hack my girlfriend's Paleo

My girlfriend and I have been doing fairly strict Paleo for the last 4 weeks. She is concerned because she has gained a few lbs and the body fat percentage on the scale (I know, not very accurate) has gone up. Here is the background. She does Crossfit 3 days per week. Her diet is pretty similar to mine except she has a little more fruit than I do (mostly berries and apples) and she eats peanut butter. Breakfast is generally eggs and bacon, lunches are leftovers and dinners are protein and vegetables and fats (coconut oil, pastured butter). She has definitely gained muscle doing Crossfit. One problem which may be a big one is her sleeping. She is a terrible sleeper and often gets up very early for Crossfit or to go to work. My success has been better than hers. Down about 10lbs in the last month and muscle gains from Crossfit on pretty much the same diet. Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

What's her BF%, out of curiosity? 145 sounds pretty average/low for 5'10".

I agree...I use the scale (and the bodyfat function) to measure change. I think what is bothering her is that mine numbers (both weight and body fat %) have been dropping and hers have gone up. So its hard to say that it is completely inaccurate for one of us and more accurate for the other.

I know you mentioned that you don't have much faith in it but seriously, don't even think about the fat percentage counter on your scale. I mean, really, there is absolutely NO WAY it will be anywhere near accurate. Even weighing yourself is somewhat less than perfect but the fat %? don't even look at it!

I forgot to mention that she is 5'10 and 145. Very close to her ideal weight.

A few pounds? If she is feeling stronger then eff it. You get stronger you're going to weigh more, all other things being equal. Especially with bad sleeping and fruit/PButter in the picture she is not going to lose fat WHILE getting new muscle.

What's her goal? If it's too lose weight itself that's not likely to happen if she is trying to add muscle by getting stronger. If she wants to lose fat then stop fruit and peanut butter, lift heavy while tracking calories. Run a slight caloric deficit on non-lifting days.

Throw away the scale.

At 5'10" and 145 she shouldn't be worried about her weight at all. What are her goals? Is she measuring in any other way (measuring tape, clothing, pictures, etc.)? How does she look, feel, and perform?

If she's looking to lean out, dropping the fruit and peanut butter should help.

I think she should cut out the fruit and peanut butter and see if that helps-- apples have a high sugar content, and peanut butter (besides the fact that peanuts are legumes, which aren't great) can also be high in sugar and carbs. Cutting out all fruits and nuts (and legumes) is usually a good way to keep going with weight loss.

I notice that I don't loose a pound if I eat high amounts of fruit. She might have to cut way back on the carbs (aka sugar, aka fructose) to loose the body fat and then she can reintroduce in to find her own maintenance level
