Chest Freezer Suggestions.

I didn't see this question asked specifically yet so what are the hackers' favorite chest freezers? I live in an apartment so an upright isn't feasible and plan on having about 100 lbs of frozen meat and bones at any given time (which I read should take about 4.5 cubic feet? Could be wrong on that.) Something affordable to buy up front and keep running would be awesome since I'm on a student budget.

I'm in NC and have all the big discount and hardware stores nearby, also don't mind getting something online if shipping is reasonable. Thanks in advance.

one thing to consider with this is that newer models are more energy efficent which could save you money in the long run. My 7.0CF model I got from home depot only costs about 20$ a year to operate.

This is a great question, this is exactly my plan. I've been looking on craigslist periodically, and chest freezers will pop up from time to time MUCH cheaper than new, if you're into that kind of thing.

Diana at Modern Paleo did a post on this a couple of months ago, she says it better than I can.

I just got a quarter cow (about 100 pounds) and bought a 7 cu ft chest freezer from Lowes for about $180. It takes up about half of the freezer. Only thing is it can't be used in temps below 55 degrees so I can't put in garage during winter. But other than that it's been great.

I bought an upright that's about 4.7 cubic feet. It looks like a fridge you'd have in your dorm....just a little bit bigger. I like it b/c it has racks etc. It's a Danby 4.7 cubic foot.

I stocked it with 42lbs of meat (22lbs of ground beef) and it took up less than half of the freezer.
