What does Frankenfood mean?

I've noticed a lot of people refer to "Frankenpaleo" foods or "Frankenfoods". What does this mean? I'm using paleo plan to organize my eating and they do include some pancake like and muffiny things.... is that bad?

Everytime I go to the Atkins website, it seems they're pushing their supplements over whole foods :(

Totally agree. I first came across the term while watching that Nova/Front Line special "Harvest of Fear" - I went full organic after that and I think my eyes were big for about a month.

Genetically modified foods are referred to as frankenfoods...like Mary Shelley's monster, two or more things put together that were not meant to be fused, creating a new entity or object that humans don't yet know the consequences of releasing into the world unleashed...referring to a pancake or the like made with a few whole foods ingredients as a frankenfood is a misuse of the word.

Frankenfoods are processed foods made from unnatural products that have all kinds of additives.

A prime example would be PopTarts or even the low carb Atkins bars.

frankenpaleo is a term used to describe a food that is a replication of one not within the paleo template with ingredients that are. i think its meant to be insulting :)

"Frankenfoods" refer to foods that have been genetically altered.

This most certainly can include foods that are labeled as Paleo because they fall into the 'general' guidelines as you might interpret them, but may not be considered a whole food (or food that has not been processed or has been minimally processed) or a food in its closest to natural state. Adding in preservatives, chemicals or other 'natural' ingredients may pass inspection for government guidelines, but there are huge allowances for some of the labeling.

I always thought that frankenfoods was in reference to foods that have been genetically modified with DNA from other organisms to allow the new hosting organism to possess traits of the grafted in DNA.

I tend to use the term to refer to highly processed industrial food. For example:
