Paleo food of the year 2011?

Answered on August 19, 2014

What would be your choice for Paleo Food of the year 2011? The one food item you feel is the most deserving.

Of course the 2011 doesn't fit because it has been an ice age or more without any change... We probably need a new title as well...

EDIT: Feel free to cast your vote even if someone has already mentioned your food.

I think it's either white rice or the white potato. This time last year people still thought that sweet potatoes were paleo and white potatoes weren't. (I'm aware I'm being a little bit provocative with that statement. But just a little.) And the rise of Perfect Health Diet (no "the," like Facebook) has brought with it a huge increase in the amount of rice consumed by paleos.

Offal (especially pastured liver) is a super-food that would win every year's contest, in my opinion.

However, if we're to just speak only about trends/fashion, I think the breakfast muffins have been a hit with Paleo dieters recently. Reddit's r/Paleo section was full of pictures from people experimenting with these lately! Tumblr's Paleo tag search revealed a lot of such pictures too. Their appeal is that you make many of these ahead of time, and then you have microwaveable breakfast for days ahead. I put a recipe up with these too (as many other Paleo bloggers did too): http://eugenia.queru.com/2012/01/18/breakfast-paleo-muffins/

I don't know if "safe" starches can be the paleo food of 2011, they only found popularity in the latter half. Assuming we don't backtrack on them this year, they'd easily win the award for 2012.

Offal is right up there, I think. I would also consider the white starches big news. And, bacon - well, that was probably just a meat-eaters food of the year in general.

I agree 100% with WCC Paul, white rice and other starches and more fruit. Granted I train several hours a day but adding more carbs (and personally, I do much better on white rice than sweet/white potatoes) did sooo much for my training, recovery, mood!!!, satiety (I could drink cream like water and still wanted more on my high fat diet) and even leanness.

Hooray for Paul Jaminet and Anthony Colpo :)

I have yet to take the plunge, but I've seen a lot of beef tongue around.

So what was 2010's food of the year?

Not a specific food exactly but there has been a lot of fermentation love online this year. Kraut, kombucha, kefir - all great stuff and all getting a little more of a shout out in 2011 (my view at least).

Some veg dishes that I make which are pretty paleo.

  • Veggie quiche
  • Cheese soup (this everyone goes nutso for. I use a small amount of rice flour instead of wheat flour to thicken)
  • Eggplant "parm" (don't fry the eggplant, broil it then layer ricotta and other cheese with tomato sauce)
  • Fritatta with veggies and potatoes
  • Veggie and cheese casserole. I like to do this with cooked broccoli and yogurt and grated cheese, just bake it in the oven until bubbly.
  • Ratatouli (not much protein, but my mom always served it with mozzarella melted on top)
  • Moroccan baked eggs in tomato sauce. Spicy and delicious!
  • Coconut flour pancakes topped with fruit (or maple syrup if you're feeling decadent)
  • Veggie fried rice
  • Yogurt parfaits with berries and nuts
  • Coconut bacon (No seriously, this is amazing. Cut strips of coconut meat and pan fry in coconut oil with a lot of salt. It's a big hit a parties.)
  • Lastly, my bf and I are big fans of the "ploughman's lunch" where we'll just sit down with a platter of cheese chunks, pickles, olives, avocado slices, hard boiled eggs, whatever else is lying around. Maybe a bit of mustard for good measure. Sometimes I'll have some meat, and he'll have tofu, but usually not. It's one of his favorite meals.
