25 year old male with ibs-d.. been on paleo diet for 1 week and my digestive issues have improved dramatically, but im on a very strict diet of paleo, only eating meat/fish/chicken and steamed vegetables..

im going to be on this diet for awhile, however im worried about not having enough energy throughout the day? i just think only eating protein and vegetables would make me more sick in the long run..

Sounds like you're a bit like me then - your IBS swings between D and C. It's like a moving target, makes it very hard to address. It's finding that perfect balance. I also take kefir, as well as an 11-strain probiotic from Custom Probiotics. I used to take VLS#3 which was really helping for a while - perfect poops - then stopped working.

really? i tried yams, but it makes me constipated. where as eating strictly fish and vegetables give me more well formed stools.. no im not taking a probiotic supplement, i am taking kefir though, kefir has 5 trillion beneficial bacteria with over 30 different strains. probiotics generally only have 5-25 billion with 2-10 strains max, so they are quite inferior

fat triggers gastric motility which, for someone with IBS-D (diarrhea predominant), can be an issue. So William may not be able to introduce a ton of fat at this point. Still, I agree that some is necessary.

Then why would you try it?

Eat fat. That's where your energy comes from. Not veggies or protein, those are important, but you need fat.

This isn't an answer... but why limit your methods of veggie prep to strictly steaming? There's lots of great ways to cook veggies.

William,

Welcome. I hope Paleo continues to help you. If you are eating meats and veggies, and lack energy, then likely you aren't having enough fat. You can try incorporating eggs or avocado, or if you can handle dairy, full fat greek yogurt.

I've been eating paleo or similar for years (very low carb, until recently), fasting 18-20 hours a day and I'm feeling great, at 50. No problems at all with energy.

If I had it all to do over again, I would have ate this way my entire life.

As long as you EAT and do not restrict calories you will be fine. A minor addition of good fats should beintroduced and elevated as tolerance allows.

You'll be fine. don't forget the good fats with EVERY meal. too much fat could cause a trip to the restroom....you'll figure out what works for you. Good luck.

I have IBS as well. I would think that IBS-D would be helped with lots of safe starches like squash, yams, carrots, beets and white rice if you can tolerate it. All of which will add calories. Also, I eat a fair amount of fat in my diet - if you can handle it add some form to your vegs.

Hope you are also taking a good probiotic.
