How to detox/cleanse my system from junk food?

Answered on August 19, 2014

I've been Paleo for about 10 weeks and I love it. I did however eat regular cake tonight. And of course feel gross as hell. Suggestions for a detoxifying?

For 90% of the world they're food. Not the best food. But not in the same category as strychnine, arsenic and amanitas. Using the word toxin for food is hyperbolic, chicken-little stuff.

I would say that most of us feel that flour and granulated sugar are toxins.

Tea does deaden appetite, especially with some cream.

+1 for not stressing out, which will add to the ill feelings and raise blood pressure way more than the cake.

Cake is not a toxin. It's a food. Other than that, exercising is the optimal way to use up the rapidly metabolized calories. Using fat as a chaser is silly, but coming from Mr. Bulletproof it's what you would expect.

No need to detoxify because cake is a food not a toxin. It's not the best thing you could eat, but that doesn't make it a poison.

Also, if you expect to be consuming toxins, it's probably useful to take some activated charcoal pills before consuming whatever you suspect has toxins (do this away from any vitamins obviously).

+1 The fats are recommended so that our bodies not only have a source of energy, but also they're used to get rid of toxins as they get wrapped up in a layer of fat (so they can't react with anything else) and then excreted.

Yup, post digestion all "complex carbs" are broken down into sugar. (and of course with the addition of the nasties such as gluten, gliadin, phytates, etc.)

Considering that cake is mostly flour and sugar it might as well be straight sugar as far as your body is concerned

The gross feeling will pass as your blood sugar returns to normal. There really is no need to "detoxify"; just go back to eating Paleo.

And I agree with MathGirl72: take note of how lousy the cake has made you feel, so you can recall that feeling the next time you're about to eat cake.

Remember this feeling for next time, but seriously, don't beat yourself up. Your health is a lifelong journey and tomorrow, you have a few good options. Get in a good, hard work out if you can manage, but if you don't feel like, don't force it. Fast if you don't have an appetite, but don't punish yourself by starving if you are hungry. If hungry, make up a nice breakfast of fat and protein, like bacon and eggs. And keep carbs low tomorrow.

Takeaway: learn a lesson, but don't stress- that piece of cake was a drop of water in an ocean.

You can speed up gut healing with some L-Glutamine, but this is like calling the fire department to put out the fire in your kitchen that you started in the first place - while the fire will be put out, you'll need to repair the damage. Best to avoid that situation to begin with.

Probiotics, good quality fats, bone broth (or gelatin) are also useful.

To avoid absorbing too many toxins, activated charcoal right before is useful. Not sure if this will help with stuff from grains, but will certainly absorb all sorts of things.

Dave Asprey (inventor of Bulletproof Diet) recommends eating a lot of healthy fats immediately after a binge. Your body will favor the shorter chain trigicerides and the nasty stuff will pass through your system. Drinking water is never a bad idea but it won't have the effect of causing your body to ignore the toxins you consumed. (This advice is generally recommended for things like snack food binges, ie chips, dips etc... not 100% sure how it applies to straight sugar.

Another idea would be to go for a serious bike ride or run - Get your body to burn the sucrose.

Let me tell you something. I've been eating 100% Paleo for 4 months, lost 20+ lbs and gained some muscle etc, etc.... Two weeks ago, I went to a wedding and ate a piece of cake. BOOM! I gained 2 pounds from bloating and stayed that way till the next weekend when...I went to another wedding and ate another two pieces of cake. BOOM! I gained another 2 lbs!

All this week I've been eating VLC and dropped 2 out of the 4 pounds. I won't do that again. I love the body I created from eating Paleo. Indulging in junky foods even in small amounts can throw me off from my goals.

If i eat sugary foods, which usually means a binge on sugary foods, ill fast the next day, but i find it interesting what tronathan posted, to eat good fats afterwards, even though it may not apply to sugary foods

I ate sugar/chocolate last night, i even had krispy kremes but im totally put off by them now, they were pretty nasty, so processed they're almost alien, i definitely couldn't eat a fatty breakfast right now all my body wants is loads of water

It is a good plan to stay home whereas you're doing a detoxification program as a result of the primary few days of the cleanse will leave you feeling weak, dizzy or sick. Detoxes are performed for such varied reasons on improve elimination and digestion, kick starting a diet or purging toxins from your body.
