HELP! Calorie question.... I know, I know. Don't hate.

I wasn't counting any calories for a while until one day I was thinking about the amount of food I eat (low starch veggies mainly, meats and eggs with limited berries) and I thought I was pretty low. I did count calories for a usual meal an for the entire day it was 900-1000 calories. That's for a 21 year old female 5'8" 210lbs. Isn't this too few to be listening to my body or is it just balancing itself out.

Yeah. My body felt more alive and energetic when I wasn't counting calories. But since I have and have been trying to increase I do t feel like I was. I'm more tired, sleeping in. Etc. I think I'm going to go back to not counting and see if I feel better

I'm in school and then at a sit down job. So it's pretty low. I try to do some in the mornings. I guess you wouldn't say I eat until I'm full rather I eat until I'm satisfied. I'm not doing it for weightless. Rather for health reasons and to prevent heart disease (what my dad died from$ I eat some sort of healthy fat every meal, avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oils, keeping fats on meats etc. I feel like I'm eating 24-7. The last three days I've gotten up to 1200-1300 by eating breakfast, green shake (Kally and berries etc), nuts, then lunch snack and supper usually something small if at all

When I was 6' 230# and first went paleo, my appetite decreased (due I think to the combination of low carb and burning some fat) and I was eating about 1100-1300 calories per day. I was counting them religiously on fitday.com for a few weeks. In retrosect, I think I really was burning fat and basically ate one meal a day. I was not hungry or suffering but just didn't feel like eating.

Having lost 25 pounds or so and now doing crossfit 3x per week I eat a little more but still not 1800 calories per day. Honestly I don't know how you can eat that much on a paleo diet, especially high fat. The food is so satisfying and high in nutrients that I can't eat that much at one sitting. Like a huge breakfast for me is a 3 egg omlette with vegetables and cheese, which is about 400 calories. When I eat this I am full until dinner. I hear about people who eat 1000 calories for breakfast and wonder how that is possible. If i was eating donuts I could probably do it, but not when eating eggs, vegetables and berries. Supplements and smoothies are another way to get a lot of calories into your system, but I avoid those, prefering real food.

Hi Rachael,

I think it’s too low. Truly, counting calories can be a tedious task; even when you think you can keep a track of everything. It’s just a psychological issue for us to think about food too much.

However, to live happily you should maintain a healthy diet. You might be aware that every person requires a different proportion of calories per day. When you buy any food products, the nutritional labels mention the calorie content in the product. A normal human needs to consume at least 2,000 calories in a day. But exactly how much your body might need depends on the height, weight, gender, age and activity level as well.

While searching for related information, I came across a good health chart at Sheffafoods.com, which actually teaches you the importance of calories and healthy foods.

It does seem rather low. Did you weigh all your food or did you just guess the portion sizes? It's VERY easy to underestimate the size of your portions without an accurate scale.

If you feel satisfied with the quantity you are eating, and your energy level, mood, libido, and immunity are all good, then I wouldn't worr about it. You are probably burning off stored fat. Once your body reaches its ideal composition, I suspect that your appetite will increase.

In my opinion, that's too low. For anyone. Especially if you're eating that few calories every day.

A few questions: What are your goals? What is your physical activity level? Are you truly full off of eating that much (or should I say little)? How many times do you eat a day? Do you add healthy fats to your meals?
