Have you been bitten by raw food?

Answered on September 12, 2014

I am considering adding more raw food to my diet. I was wondering though if you have been bitten by raw food? What did you eat and how bad did it get? As in sick...

EDIT: If you have been bitten by live raw food that would be interesting as well...

Coconut butter makes me feel nauseous and physically weak. I tried the Artisana brand a few weeks ago, thinking maybe the other brand I'd eaten was just bad, but no I had to lay down afterwards.

RJ, I'm curious, what do you mean by "sick" from coconut butter? What were your symptoms? I'm trying to pinpint the sources of my bloating and wondering if my tablespoon or two of coconut butter for dessert is the culprit.

I'm the same way, I'm totally down for some "raw vegan" treats. They usually don't feel the same way about "Paleo" treats though :(

Actually, no. Only cooked has ever made me sick.

I eat a ton of raw veg, sashimi, shellfish and mollusks, beef tartare. I've had slivers of raw horse. Raw dairy. For some reason my eating raw kale always seems to shock people.. I have no idea why. Never a reaction, I've never had a "hey what the hell did you do to me" kind of deal.

Oh! I really like those vegan raw coconut "cookies." The chocolate ones are really tasty, not very sweet.

A few things, yeah. Coconut butter makes me quite sick (fine with oil, so it's the meat). Some raw nuts, walnuts especially, irritate my mouth/throat. Pineapple gives my tongue angry bumps.

I've been smitten, does that count? I raid the raw vegan section of my grocery store for treats all the time. :)

Raw cabbage blows me up like dyn-o-mite.

I goose bit me when I was a kid. SCARY!

There are some foods I never eat raw. Not sure if it's an intolerance/allergy or just being grossed out by the texture. I definitly get itchy when eating raw waluts and also bananas. Raw mushrooms are just plain gross.

Fortunately no! My raw foods are pretty much limited to sushi, oysters, fruit & salads. I've found a couple baby slugs in my salads, but we got along fine (I took them outside & set them free).

Never had any bad experience with raw food...ever. Twice had food poisoning in my life, both by cooked food (probably canned food gone bad).

I got really sick after eating mustard greens. I'm not sure whether it was a contaminated bag or I have a problem with mustard greens, because I've had no desire to try again. :-))

Last week a ladybug bite my tongue (reminds me of a lousy French kisser I knew once). Musta been one of those biting Asian ladybugs (usually had better luck with Asians). I'm gonna think twice before tasting ladybugs next year when the insectivore seasons ramps up again (unless she looks especially delicious).

Only been sick by cooked foods twice (believed to be ground beef from fast food restaurants, probably undercooked and/or mishandled). Puts the fear of fast food tacos in you. That is what I get for "Practicing Paleo" for 15+ years and is a good reminder to make it at home.

I eat raw beef, chicken, seafood, eggs, and dairy. I have never had a problem with any of the raw. If it smells "off" I do not eat it and a couple times it (raw chicken or beef) smelt fine but my gag reflex prevented me from swallowing so I spit it out. Figured it was my senses telling me it was not good.

On a side note: before going Paleo I would often get raging headaches and feel terrible until I threw up. I assumed it was a sensitivity to something in the processed crap I was eating.

I do a mix of raw and cooked meats/eggs/dairy in my diet. I am not completely raw and still do not have a problem when consuming raw.
