Food Poisoning Induced IBS

Answered on August 19, 2014

I got food poisoning a few months back and have had IBS ever since. I saw a gastroenterologist and he said there's nothing he can do. I tried fasting for a day and I eat fermented foods almost daily but still no improvement. Does anyone know any ways of overcoming IBS?

Shouldn't any parasite come out in a stool test?

Yeah, its really not that easy, though. You can eat meat and vegetables and still have terrible IBS- I certainly have.

This is true! I have an amazing paleo-friendly gastro doc who tested me for all sorts of parasites trying to figure out my IBS. Def get tested for them. You never know!

I second this. You can go ahead and try out all of the usual diet advice, probiotics, etc. Otherwise, see someone who will help you determine the problem.

It can actually take a good while for the gut to rebalance after an insult like food poisoning. Your gut bugs probably got ploughed out of there, killed, or otherwise rearranged. Keep with the Paleo diet, avoid sugar like the plague (if feeds bad gut bugs....coming from someone with IBS...take it from me), and I agree a Whole30 is a great idea. A probiotic could help, but may not. I take a prescription probiotic (Rezyst) which helps my IBS (cause unknown...I didn't have food poisoning). You could ask your gastro doc about that. Stick with the fermented foods too.

same thing happened to me, except i had it for 4 years, it was a horrible experience, it was like a mild case of chrons though for me.

you need to go to a naturopath or intergrative health doctor and get tested for parasites.. thats what i had. i went to 4 different "mainstream" docs and they couldnt find it

ibs is just a umbrella term for a whole host of gastrointestinal issues..

I would recommend doing a Whole30. This will eliminate any digestive irritants for a month so your bowel can fully heal itself. Then you should be good to go. Visit whole9life.com for details.

Bone broth is an excellent standard go to for gut healing. I use it to make stews. What are your symptoms...pain, bloating, diareaha, constipation?

have you tried FODMAPS or GAPS diets?
